Shortridge High School

Shortridge High School Shortridge High School: an IB World School In a society eager to promote educational excellence and sound values, Shortridge will be a home to both.

As the world becomes increasingly more complex and interdependent, the necessity to study cultures different from our own becomes increasingly essential. Thus, in grades nine through twelve we have elected to adopt the International Baccalaureate Programme which emphasizes international mindedness, intercultural understanding and academic rigor. Shortridge High School offers a unique opportunity t

o distinguish itself as a high school dedicated to the principles of leadership, scholarship and service. As participants in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme, students may compete in national math or music events, master a foreign language, curate an art exhibition, or perform on stage. From our time at Gambold Prep, our learning community has retained educational leaders who both reflect our core values and are experts in their respective fields. I am proud of their commitment to the ideals and promise of education; SHS has retained 90% of its teaching faculty. As the faculty implements a curriculum that is both rigorous and flexible, and expansive in breadth and depth, we welcome inquiry and inspire greatness. Committed to serving a community from different backgrounds, SHS reflects the cultural diversity of Indianapolis and welcomes a heterogeneous population of learners and teachers. As an inner city school we are confronted with images of poverty, homelessness, racism and conflict. To help reverse these social ills, our students are taught to lead remarkable, compassionate and socially significant lives. The Shortridge High faculty and staff share a common vision of education. Education is a powerful force that must be leveraged to create a safer, more equitable and prosperous community. Our vision is that through education our students will not only achieve academic success, but will also become active and engaged citizens who work for the greater good of society. The key to overcoming challenges such as violence, poverty, racism, hunger, homelessness, and unemployment is an educated citizenry willing to become engaged in civil discourse. Education can help solve society's ills. We must teach our children tenacity, integrity and help them develop a sense of empowerment and an understanding of the importance of service; our graduates will apply their skills and passions to create a lasting impact on their community. We have a singular, visionary goal of educating citizens who think freely, demonstrate intellectual vitality, and address needs and realities greater than themselves. I hope you will join me at Shortridge High School; whether you visit our campus, or decide to enroll, we look forward to welcoming you.

Karol Redondo-Ponce didn’t always feel confident sharing her ideas. Like many students, she once second-guessed her voice. That began to change inside the Writing Center at Shortridge High School, where encouragement and honest feedback helped her grow.

Now, the 17-year-old senior is headed to Columbia University, where she plans to study biochemistry on the pre-med track to become an OB/GYN.

Shortridge High School boys basketball team is turning heads.

“I think we’re a good team because we have a lot of players that people didn’t believe in,” Shortridge's Elijah Wilson said. “A lot of us didn’t have an opportunity to prove what we could bring. At Shortridge, we all have a chance to go there and show what we got.”
