The ISDA’s Economic Development team has been administering the USDA grant, Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure for the last 2.5 years. This grant program focuses on building capacity in Indiana’s food system supply chain.

As part of the grant, the department recently sponsored training for 22 Indiana attendees that own food businesses and/or lead regional food system non-profits. Attendees had the opportunity to visit the Kalamazoo Valley Food Hub in Kalamazoo, Michigan where they received training in food processing and received an insider look at the operations of a robust regional food hub participating in a farm-to-school program.

Attendees learned about different equipment used in fruit and vegetable processing that could benefit their middle-of-the-supply-chain food businesses, so that they can consider efficient operations and simple investments to improve their processes. ISDA is honored to support more Indiana food to Hoosiers.

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture is once again offering a no-cost, soil sampling program for producers in the Mississippi River Basin.

This program focuses on soil sampling and testing because it is a key component, and first step, of developing a plan for nutrient management. This program includes pasture, hay and specialty crop fields located within Indiana’s portion of the Mississippi River Basin.

Recently, INDYCAR announced that the 2027 NTT INDYCAR SERIES will be fueled by Shell’s 100 percent renewable race fuel.

The ethanol will be sourced from Indiana processing plants, supporting farmers and agricultural businesses across the state.

Whether visiting an orchard such as Tuttle Orchard in Greenfield, getting lost in a corn maze at Goebel Farms in Evansville, learning about livestock at Kuehnert Dairy in Fort Wayne, or visiting a local winery like Wildcat Creek in Lafayette. David Bausman, Deputy Director and General Counsel of ISDA, recently attended multiple events focused on the future of agriculture in Indiana.

First, he attended the Indiana Farm Bureau Drainage School. At this event he discussed the importance of updating the Indiana Drainage Handbook, which is currently being updated. The new book will provide landowners and government officials with a manual that is user friendly, at the end of this year.

Second, he attended Becknology Days by Beck's Hybrids. At this event he served on a panel with other agriculture leaders to discuss current issues in agriculture and potential solutions across the agricultural industry.

We are proud to have staff members that represent ISDA at these events that impact the future of agriculture in Indiana.

The Bio Heartland, that is what Indiana has been defined as. A term that shows the encompassing aspects of agriculture from the farmer to the industry leaders in agriculture research. It is a term to be used when discussing Indiana Agriculture.
