OFF-ROAD VEHICLE (ORV) SAFETY: As we wrap up ORV safety week, we want to take this opportunity to review five of the top safety tips to ensure a safe ride!

1. Wear safety gear such as helmets, long sleeves and pants, boots, and gloves.
2. Ride sober.
3. No passengers on single-rider ATVs.
4. Only one passenger on factory-designed, two-rider ATVs.
5. Ride an ATV that is right for your age.

Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an award-winning environmental education program that produces activities and resources for educators seeking to engage their students with the natural world through the lens of trees and forests. In Indiana, PLT is coordinated through the Indiana DNR Division of Forestry and offers hands-on, outdoor professional development across the state!

If you are an Indiana educator looking for a fun and active opportunity to earn PGP points or CE credits with resources for learning about Indiana’s amazing forests, check the PLT calendar for the next workshop near you or make a request for your group at dnr.IN.gov/forestry/programs/education/project-learning-tree

This date in 1911 marks a tragic chapter in Indiana’s Lake Michigan maritime history. The J.D. Marshall capsized during a severe storm and sank just 600 yards offshore from the Indiana Dunes State Park. Four crew members lost their lives.

Originally built in South Haven, Michigan in 1891, the vessel hauled commercial and industrial goods like lumber, before it was converted into a sand sucker barge. In 2015, the 100 acre shipwreck site became Indiana’s first underwater nature preserve, protecting the wreck’s cultural history and the surrounding Lake Michigan ecosystem. The ship's propeller now rests next to the Porter County park’s pavilion on the beach.
