Due to proposed changes to HUD's federal funding that slash support for evidence-based permanent housing and supportive solutions, 1,945 households in Indianapolis are in jeopardy of becoming homeless again in 2026.
"Work to end homelessness in Indianapolis faces significant challenges with new priorities for federal funding. The city is at risk of losing about $10 million designated for long-term housing programs – including permanent supportive housing and rapid-rehousing efforts...Indianapolis has hinged much of its plans to end homelessness on those permanent housing strategies, which have been shown to reduce chronic homelessness"
What can we do?
Call for Immediate Congressional Action
• Urge your representatives to include language in the FY26 appropriations bill directing HUD to renew all Continuum of Care (CoC) grants expiring in calendar year 2026 for a full 12 months. This builds on the FY24 two-year renewal option but makes it directive, not permissive, ensuring stability for communities.
Call for A Pragmatic, No-Cost Solution
• A one-year renewal is a modest, no-cost extension that preserves housing for tens of thousands of Americans. It gives Congress time to work with the Administration on thoughtful policy changes without destabilizing communities.
• With the loss of federal funding, local nonprofit organizations must rely on the generous donations of local supporters. Ensure organizations like Stopover can continue to house and support those experiencing homelessness in Indy! https://stopoverinc.org
