Partnered together since 2005, St.Vincent StatFlight is a cooperative venture between PHI Air Medical Group, LLC and St.Vincent Health. StatFlight provides high-level critical care and rapid air medical transport. With bases located in West Lafayette, Seymour, Marion, Greencastle, Rushville, and Evansville. StatFlight’s service area stretches from border to border, serving the entire state of Indiana as well as portions of Ohio, Kentucky and Illinois. St.Vincent StatFlight is accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS).

MEET THE CREW: STATFLIGHT 3

Jake Ashley | Flight Nurse/Paramedic, CFRN, NRP

With 8 years of experience in healthcare and 5 years in air medical transport, Jake brings a strong clinical background in emergency medicine and intensive care to the StatFlight 3 crew.

Jake first became interested in air medical transport at 18, looking for a career that would keep him out of an office and allow him to do something exciting. With experience in both the emergency department and intensive care unit, he brings valuable knowledge and skills to providing critical care in the air. His favorite part of the job is utilizing an expanded scope of practice to provide the best possible care for the patients he transports.

Outside of work, Jake enjoys fly fishing and spending quality time with his wife and their three kids.

When asked what he loves most about the StatFlight 3 crew, Jake describes the team as young, motivated, optimistic, and made up of highly skilled professionals.

WHERE SHOULD WE GO NEXT?? 🚁

Our first StatFlight recruitment event was such a success that we’re planning another and we want your input! Interested in becoming a flight nurse or flight paramedic? This event gives you an inside look at what the job really involves, from shift change and daily aircraft checks to patient care, training, and life on a 24-hour shift. We’ll also discuss experience requirements, the interview and hiring process, and opportunities with StatFlight. You’ll meet our crew, hear about real flight experiences, and have time to ask questions!

We’re considering Evansville, Madison, Greencastle, and Richmond for our next Flight Nurse/ Flight Paramedic Recruitment Event. If you’re interested in attending, take our quick survey and tell us which location works best for you!

Why is the preflight checklist so important?

Aviation safety starts long before takeoff! A thorough preflight checklist helps ensure critical aircraft systems are inspected, safety equipment is ready, and potential issues are identified before they become problems.

Even the most experienced pilots rely on checklists because experience doesn’t eliminate human error. Checklists help prevent missed steps, promote consistency, and ensure nothing important is overlooked.

In air medical aviation, every detail matters. Our crews depend on a safe, mission-ready aircraft to care for patients and bring everyone home safely.

Statflight 3 would like to give a BIG thank you to the Marion Lions Club for hosting Touch-A-Truck and inviting us to be part of such a great community event!

We enjoyed bringing the helicopter out, meeting local families, connecting with fellow first responders, and giving the community an opportunity to learn more about air medical transport.

We appreciate the Lions Club and everyone who helped make this event a success. Thank you for continuing to bring our community together!

Happy Emergency Nurses Week to all the incredible emergency nurses who show up every day for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments!

Statflight 3 had the opportunity to visit our local friends at Marion General Hospital, Marion East Emergency Department, and our EMS partners to celebrate and show our appreciation. We enjoyed connecting with familiar faces, meeting team members, sharing some treats and goodie bags, and thanking everyone for the hard work they do for our communities.

We are grateful for the teamwork, dedication, and collaboration between emergency nurses, physicians, and EMS professionals. The work you do matters, and we appreciate the opportunity to work alongside such outstanding teams.

In air medical, experience matters, but it doesn’t make any of us immune to complacency. Our StatFlight crews spent time in our required annual AMRM (Air Medical Resource Management) class with Arakai, one of our Marion pilots, reinforcing the habits that help keep our crews and patients safe. Communication, teamwork, recognizing risks, and speaking up all matter on every flight, no matter how routine it may seem. This yearly training gives us a chance to step back, challenge our habits, and remember that everyone has a voice when it comes to safety.

MEET THE CREW: STATFLIGHT 3

Ferdinand Tordai | Lead Pilot

With 29 years as a licensed pilot, Ferdinand brings an incredible depth of aviation experience to the crew. He has spent 23 years with PHI, including two years flying in the Gulf of Mexico, and has dedicated 21 years to EMS aviation. He has also served as the Lead Pilot at the Marion/Anderson base for 7 years.

Ferdinand originally came to air medical to check a box on a personal and professional goal—but stayed for the helicopter career and the family-friendly lifestyle it offered.

His favorite part of the job? The autonomy of single-pilot decision-making, making a positive impact in the local community, and, of course, the sunsets from altitude.

Outside of work, Ferdinand enjoys mountain biking, motorcycling, pickleball, fantasy and sci-fi books, and his favorite snack is ramen noodles. A fun fact about him: he speaks three languages!

When asked about the StatFlight 3 crew, Ferdinand says he’s impressed by their high level of professional competence and easy-going camaraderie, making Marion a great place to work. 💙🤍
