โ˜€๏ธ Talk with your kids about curfew, and decide how often they should check in

โ˜€๏ธUtilize location-sharing apps to our child. If you are using a location-tracking app, be honest about it. Explain that itโ€™s a tool for safety, not a lack of trust

โ˜€๏ธKnow where your kids are and who theyโ€™re with

โ˜€๏ธEstablish rules about parties, gatherings, and sleepovers

โ˜€๏ธSet expectations for social media and phone use

โ˜€๏ธMake sure your child always has a safe ride home plan

โ˜€๏ธKnow the parents of your childโ€™s friends whenever possible. Having their contact information in your phone is essential for emergencies or quick plan changes.

โ˜€๏ธKeep communication open. Kids are more likely to follow rules when they feel heard.

Starting these conversations early builds trust and sets the tone for a safe and fun summer ahead!

The information provided is preliminary and subject to change.

On May 28, 2026, just before 8:30 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) East District officers responded to a report of a person shot in the first block of N. Rural Street. Officers arrived on the scene and located an adult female with injuries consistent with gunshot wound(s). The victim was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased. IMPD Homicide detectives were requested to the scene to oversee the investigation.

Officers learned from a cooperative witness that the suspect, an adult male, fled the scene following the shooting.

Through various investigative techniques, IMPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) officers located the suspect vehicle in the 7500 block of Bullock Court. There, officers observed the suspect and another male get into a different vehicle and leave. Officers began following the second vehicle while waiting for additional backup to arrive. Officers then attempted a traffic stop near the intersection of W. Southport Road and Bluff Road. At that point, the vehicle stopped and the driver, who was not the homicide suspect, exited the vehicle uninjured and was quickly taken into custody without incident.

The homicide suspect remained in the vehicle alone, moved into the driverโ€™s seat and a vehicle a pursuit began. Officers deployed stop sticks near S. Harding Street and W. Morris Street in an effort to safely end the pursuit. In the 1000 block of S. Harding Street, near I-70, an IMPD SWAT vehicle performed a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver on the suspect vehicle. After the suspect vehicle was stopped, an officer involved shooting occurred and the suspect was struck. The suspect was detained and transported to an area hospital in stable condition. Two fi****ms were recovered at the scene and can be viewed on IMPD News.

There are no known injuries to officers or uninvolved community members. Body-worn and in-car cameras were activated at the time and captured the incident.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to collect potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Prosecutorโ€™s Office also responded to assist in the investigation.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team is leading the criminal investigation. A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. As standard procedure in officer-involved shooting incidents, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave.

Following the criminal investigation, the civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will hold a mandatory hearing regarding the attempted use of deadly force.

The Police Officer Support Team (POST) responded to provide peer support for those involved.

The IMPD Victims Assistance unit responded to assist officers and detectives.

Anyone with information on the Rural Street homicide is asked to contact Detective Jose Torres at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475, or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Erika Jones at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475, or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
