IHRC's outgoing Executive Director, Deena Pitman, received the Distinguished Hoosier Award from Governor Braun today. The award was presented to Deena by Business Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Mike Speedy on behalf of Governor Braun. The Distinguished Hoosier Award is one of the highest awards given to Indiana citizens by the governor. It is awarded to those who distinguish themselves by significant contributions to their communities, and whose qualities and actions endear them in the hearts and minds of Hoosiers. Congratulations Deena!

Dr. Kerry Peterson Joins Commission as Indiana’s Equine Medical Director
The Indiana Horse Racing Commission (IHRC) recently hired Kerry Peterson, D.V.M as their Equine Medical Director. Dr. Peterson, a seasoned veterinarian, brings with her over fifteen years of experience with equine and small animal private practice and regulatory veterinary medicine. She most recently served as the Medical Director and Veterinarian of Pet Wellness Clinics, which has nine locations in central Indiana. In addition, her past regulatory experience includes Director of Animal Health Programs for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. Notice to Standardbred Trainers Utilizing Veterinary Services for Horses Racing at Harrah’s Hoosier Park

The Indiana Horse Racing Commission (“IHRC”) is aware of the alleged criminal activity and federal indictment of numerous veterinarians, trainers, and others purportedly involved in the illegal medication of racehorses. To ensure that all Indiana trainers are aware of, and in compliance with, the rules in place in Indiana, the IHRC is issuing this notice.

Pursuant to 71 IAC 5-3-3(9), a trainer is responsible for using the services of those veterinarians licensed by the commission to attend horses that are on association grounds. No trainer shall permit a veterinarian whose license is suspended in any jurisdiction or who is excluded from the stable area of tracks under the jurisdiction of the commission to treat any horse, regardless of its location, that has or will be actively participating in racing in Indiana during the 2021 race meet and beyond.
