Indiana Senior Medicare Patrol Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is committed to helping Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries avoid, detect, prevent, and report health care fraud.

SMP not only protects older persons, they also help preserve the integrity of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. SMP staff and teams of highly trained volunteers conduct outreach to Medicare beneficiaries in their communities through group presentations, exhibiting at community events, answering calls to the SMP helplines, and one-on-one counseling. Like much of the SMP audience, most SMP volunte

ers are retirees and Medicare beneficiaries themselves and are well-positioned to assist their peers. The Indiana Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) project was supported, in part by grant number 90MPPG0035, from the U.S. Administration for Community Living, Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C. 20201. Grantees undertaking projects under government sponsorship are encouraged to express freely their findings and conclusions. Have you gotten a call asking you to confirm your Medicare number or asking if you got a new Medicare card that's:
-Plastic
-Microchipped
-For any other reason
If so, it's a scammer trying to get your actual Medicare number to scam Medicare and steal your medical identity.

Did you know that detecting fraud on your Medicare statements is one of the most important things you can do to stop Medicare fraud? Look for common red flags like:

🏴 Do you recognize the provider and the place that is billing you?
🏴 Did you have an appointment on the date billed?
🏴 Were you charged for something more than once?

If you see anything concerning, call your doctor and see if it was an error. If you can't get it resolved, report it to the SMP! Find your local by calling 877.808.2468 or use the SMP Locator at www.smpresource.org.

As a caregiver, one way you can help protect your loved one is to watch out for scammers. One way scammers go after people is through the mail.

Sending documents that look like official government letters, claiming they need personal information like a Social Security number, Medicare number, or banking information, are ways they can create financial ruin for your loved one.

The next time you visit your loved one, review their mail with them using the tips below.
