IDEM Emergency Response responded to an oil spill on the East Fork White River in Jackson County on the evening of Sept. 6.

Responders observed a dark oil sheen extending approximately five miles along the river. Working with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Jackson County Emergency Management, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, and private industry, crews traced the oil to a nearby tributary.

The source was identified as an above-ground storage tank that had been dumped in a wooded area and was leaking oil into the waterway. Responders placed absorbent boom to help contain and collect the oil.

IDEM Emergency Response will continue working with the responsible party and monitoring the site and cleanup efforts to help protect the East Fork White River and surrounding environment.

IDEM’s Office of Water Quality had a great time at Bug Fest 2026 at Southeastway Park - Indy Parks and Recreation and Recreation last week. 🪲

Our team collected aquatic macroinvertebrates from a nearby creek and shared them with visitors throughout the day. People learned how these small stream organisms help us understand water quality, support healthy ecosystems, and play an important role in Indiana’s natural environment. 💧
