Indiana Department of Environmental Management

Indiana Department of Environmental Management IDEM: Protecting Hoosiers and the Environment since 1986.

Environmental protection in Indiana has come a long way since 1986, when the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) was established. Since then, IDEM has grown, and employs some of Indiana's most qualified engineers, scientists and environmental project managers specializing in air, land, pollution prevention and water quality issues. Our staff members work hard to provide quality e

nvironmental oversight and technical assistance in your community and around the state. Whether you're a business owner, consultant, student, farmer, teacher or parent, IDEM is here to help you.

Indiana saw a busy night of rain and thunderstorms overnight, especially in the northern part of the state.
While the conditions look a little more clear over the weekend, please remember that heavy rainfall can wash bacteria and other pollutants into our waterways. As a result, we expect elevated E. coli levels at our Indiana beaches. 🏖️

Sampling is underway at area lakes this morning. Just a heads up: water samples need 24 hours to culture, so we won’t have updated results until tomorrow.

If you’re planning a beach trip, stay informed by checking IDEM’s BeachAlert website. You can also sign up to receive email or text notifications whenever a beach advisory is posted. More than 35 area beaches participate in the program.

Happy ! 🌽

Did you know Indiana is a top corn producer? We produce over 1 billion bushels of corn annually, but it's not just for eating! Corn fuels our cars, makes yummy popcorn, and even helps with corn flour and cornmeal. 🚗💨

Hoosier farmers, producers, and others in the ag industry, connect with Megan Espinda, IDEM's agricultural liaison, for confidential support. She's happy to answer your questions and help you navigate environmental regulations and programs.

Meet Kevin Gaston, IDEM Senior Environmental Manager in IDEM’s Office of Water Quality.

Originally from Brownsburg, Kevin earned both his B.S. and M.S. from Ball State University and is a Certified Fisheries Professional.

As the Fish Community Program Manager, he leads field crews that collect fish data from rivers and streams across Indiana to help assess water quality and stream health. Kevin says one of the best parts of his job is sharing his passion for aquatic science through public outreach and student education. Since 2012, he has been involved with instructing students enrolled in Indiana University's limnology course on how to conduct an electrofishing survey and identifying fish in the field.

Outside of work, Kevin enjoys fishing, kayaking, and traveling, especially near the water. A fun fact: he helped double the known Indiana range of the state-endangered Redside Dace.
