The current makeup of the General Assembly, consisting of 100 Representatives serving 2-year terms and 50 senators serving 4-year terms, was established in the Constitution of 1851. The General Assembly met every other year until 1972, when it began meeting annually.

With affordability top of mind for Hoosiers, tackling the high energy costs Hoosiers are struggling with is a top priority of Senate Republicans. This year, Senate Republicans unanimously supported a law to overhaul ratemaking in our state by creating a performance based ratemaking model that promotes affordable energy, reliable service and predictable utility bills for Hoosiers. This new law builds on our past work to save Hoosiers $220 million by ending the state's utility receipts tax. To learn more, read this week's blog on how Senate Republicans are working to address high energy costs in Indiana.

Across the state, Hoosiers have made it clear that utility prices are simply too high. With many people struggling to get by, Senate Republicans have continued to work tirelessly to make life easier by making utility rates more affordable.

Affordability continues to be top of mind for Hoosiers, with many families struggling to get by as the cost of everyday necessities like gas and groceries rise. Senate Republicans have a strong track record of cutting taxes – reducing our state's income tax rate to one of the lowest in the nation, exempting military income for Hoosiers who are part of the Armed Forces, and removing taxes on tips and overtime pay for 2026. These cuts coupled with the suspended gas taxes and expanded use of dyed diesel for Hoosier farmers is saving Hoosiers money, and Senate Republicans will continue working to ensure you keep more of your hard-earned money.
