Last week, we gathered with IMPD Downtown District to honor the life and legacy of Deputy Kay Carolyn Gregory, who was killed in the line of duty on May 10, 2002 by a driver who ran a red light.

Her service, sacrifice, and dedication to this community will never be forgotten. We remember Deputy Gregory not only for the badge she wore, but for the lasting impact she left on those who served beside her and the community she protected.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

At the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, we recognize that mental health is a critical part of public safety. Supporting people in crisis requires compassion, collaboration, and a commitment to meeting people where they are.

Every day, our deputies and staff encounter individuals facing mental health challenges. We continue to expand training, strengthen partnerships with mental health providers, and support approaches that prioritize care, de-escalation, and connection to resources.

“Our responsibility is not just to respond to crises, but to be part of a system that prevents them,” said Sheriff Kerry Forestal. “That means investing in mental health, supporting alternatives to incarceration when appropriate, and ensuring every person is treated with dignity and respect.”

If you or someone you know is struggling, you are not alone. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength.

If you need immediate support, you can call or text 988, the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, to connect with trained counselors 24/7.

Yesterday we had the privelege of celebrating five new MCSO Deputies on their completion of the MCSO Deputy Academy! They were ceremoniously welcomed by Executive Officer Kelvis Williams, their academy staff, and touching remarks were given by Class Leader Deputy Pegues.

Please join us in welcoming the following people to the MCSO family:
Deputy Tyree Pegues
Deputy Joseph Lovalvo
Deputy Jonathon Barclay
Deputy James Ison
Deputy Michael Cardona

Their dedication, hard work, and commitment throughout the academy were on full display, and it was incredible to see them reach this important milestone. While we’re proud of how far they’ve come, this is only the beginning of their journey.

Next stop: Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, where they’ll continue sharpening the skills and knowledge needed to serve our community with professionalism and integrity.
Please join us in congratulating these deputies and wishing them continued success as they take the next step in their law enforcement careers! 🚔👏
