🎃👻 Decorating for Halloween? Keep it spooky, but keep it safe! 🕸️

Keep decorations away from heat sources, teach children to stay away from open flames, keep exits clear, and choose glow sticks or battery-operated candles whenever possible. A few simple precautions can help prevent a Halloween scare from turning into a real emergency! 🧡🖤

🔋⚡ CHARGE SMART. STAY SAFE! ⚡🔋

From power tools to e-bikes, rechargeable batteries make our lives easier—but improper charging can create a serious fire risk.

🚒 The Pike Township Fire Department encourages everyone to follow these battery safety tips:

✅ Charge outdoors in a safe, dry location away from your home, garage, exits, and anything that can burn. Keep batteries protected from rain and extreme temperatures.

✅ Use the manufacturer-approved charger designed for your specific battery.

✅ Never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight.

✅ Unplug when fully charged and follow the manufacturer's charging instructions.

✅ Inspect batteries and cords for damage, swelling, leaks, or unusual heat. Never charge a damaged battery or use a damaged cord.

✅ Keep a clear escape route and never charge batteries where they could block an exit.

🚨 If a battery becomes unusually hot, swells, hisses, leaks, or gives off an unusual odor, move away and call 911 if there is an immediate danger. Never attempt to handle a battery that is smoking or on fire.

A few simple precautions can help prevent a battery fire and protect your family, home, and community!

Pike Township Fire Dept. would like to take a moment to congratulate Donny Ruark on his appointment the Division Chief of EMS. Chief Ruark will be overseeing all medical aspects of the department which includes 102 EMTs, 69 Paramedics, 1 community health paramedic, 4 ambulances, and 5 advanced life support engines that respond to over 11,800 EMS calls annually. Congratulations!

Pike Township Fire Dept. would like to take a moment to remember a fallen hero. Captain Josh Ramirez passed away four years ago, today, after a long battle with occupational cancer. Capt. Ramirez was a 17-year veteran of , a member of Indiana USAR Task Force #1, and a mentor for the Hoosier Burn Camp. His love and commitment to serving those in need cannot be overstated. Josh is dearly missed, but not forgotten.

🍂🏡 **Fall Break is the perfect time to practice fire safety!** 🚒

As your family settles into fall break, take a few minutes to create a **Home Fire Escape Plan** and practice a home fire drill together!

🔥 Draw a map of your home and identify two ways out of every room.
🔥 Make sure smoke alarms are working.
🔥 Choose an outdoor meeting place a safe distance from your home.
🔥 Practice your escape plan with everyone in the household, including children and overnight guests.

Remember, in a real fire, **get outside, stay outside, and never go back inside!**

A little preparation today can make a big difference in an emergency. Make fire safety part of your fall break plans! ❤️🧡

This week, our crews from Station 65 had the opportunity to train along the Indianapolis Fire Department tactical squads on advanced water rescue skills. A special thank you to IFD for inviting us out and also Eagle Creek Park for continued use of their dam and waterways.
