2026 marks the 250th anniversary, or semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. To commemorate this anniversary, we are featuring the many resources of all types in Indiana that are designated National Historic Landmarks. The Broad Ripple Park “White City” Carousel is one of the earliest carousels featuring Gustav A. Dentzel’s design of menagerie animals. Constructed in 1917, it operated in Broad Ripple Park as part of an amusement park known as White City, owned by the Union Traction Company. After the park changed ownership multiple times in the subsequent decades, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis eventually acquired the carousel in pieces before undertaking a major restoration in the 1970s. Today, it is still in use and a highlight of the museum. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 (NR-0868).
