2026 marks the 250th anniversary, or semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. To commemorate this anniversary, we are featuring the many resources of all types in Indiana that are designated National Historic Landmarks. To learn more about these resources, visit the State Historic Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD): on.IN.gov/SHAARD. The Broad Ripple Park “White City” Carousel is one of the earliest carousels featuring Gustav A. Dentzel’s design of menagerie animals. Constructed in 1917, it operated in Broad Ripple Park as part of an amusement park known as White City, owned by the Union Traction Company. After the park changed ownership multiple times in the subsequent decades, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis eventually acquired the carousel in pieces before undertaking a major restoration in the 1970s. Today, it is still in use and a highlight of the museum. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 (NR-0868).

DHPA will be hosting both virtual and in-person Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP) trainings this year in partnership with the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) for our Indiana CLG commissions and staff.

Virtual CAMP Essentials, June 23rd & 24th: 1pm – 4 pm.
This virtual training will include the four foundational topics that every commissioner and staff needs to know: Why Preserve? An Introduction to Historic Preservation, Legal Basics, Standards and Guidelines for Design Review and Meeting Procedures. Each day will include two topics along with opportunities for questions/discussions. Attendees are encouraged to attend all four sessions, but we understand that may not be possible. The sessions will be recorded and will be available for 60 days after the training for those who have registered for the training. This training is free for current historic preservation commission members and staff, but advance registration is required. Registration is available online now at https://preservinghistoricplaces.regfox.com/camp-2026. The registration deadline for the virtual training is June 16th.

In Person CAMP at the Preserving Historic Places Conference, September 29th
This day-long in person training will include six topics, three of the foundational topics covered in the virtual training and three additional topics: Legal Basics, Standards and Guidelines for Design Review, Meeting Procedures, Envisioning Infill Design, Identifying and Designating Historic Resources, Preservation Planning/Community Visioning and Engagement.
