You may be surprised to know that fire is not the biggest danger a firefighter faces. Heart attacks and heat strokes are what bring more firefighters down, which are brought on by the conditions they work in. That is why it is really important that they stay hydrated and nourished while on scene. One of the functions the Indianapolis Fire Buffs provide is rehab support for fire departments in Indianapolis and the surrounding counties. Firefighters love it when an RSU pulls up. RSU stands for Rehab Support Unit. Inside our RSUs are coolers of Gatorade and water and trays of snacks, which are provided through our partnership with the Salvation Army. We typically go on runs that have a long duration, like 2nd alarm fires and higher. We also go on dive runs, urban searches, Hazmat incidents, and we provide rehab for the SWAT team. In 1963, a dozen or so businessmen, who were keenly interested in firefighting, banded together into an organization known as the Indianapolis Second-Alarm “BUFFS”. Their purpose was a sincere aim to promote firefighting efficiency and fire prevention in every way possible. Today, the Indianapolis Fire Buffs (IFB) continue with that same mission and have expanded into today’s need for rehab of crews working long and strenuous incidents. The members of the Indianapolis Fire Buffs are a mix of current and former/retired firefighters and firefighting enthusiasts.
The Indianapolis Fire Buffs meet together twice a month. Every first Saturday we go to a different Indianapolis Fire Department station and cook breakfast for the firefighters stationed on shift. We also have our monthly meeting every third Wednesday.
