MCPHD staff responded to late-August flooding by staffing four pop-up clinics in the affected areas and by providing safety information to residents and connections to public health resources from a mobile unit. MCPHD nurses have administered more than 100 Tdap vaccines to help reduce the risk of tetanus for those who were exposed to floodwaters, or who received cuts or wounds during cleanup work.

While Tuberculosis (TB) is not a common disease in the United States, it can be very serious or even fatal.

In 2025, there were more than 1,250 latent cases of TB in Marion County, and 88 people with active TB.

MCPHD’s TB Control Program has public health nurses and community health workers who provide healthcare and social support to people with TB.

MCPHD’s Tire Recycling Day event earlier this month was a success with more than 700 tires collected and sent to Liberty Tire Recycling.

Some waste tires were brought by residents to the two collection sites, but the majority of the tires were collected by MCPHD staff, who spent the day doing alley sweeps and collecting discarded tires. Also retrieved were a large number of tires through a partnership with the South East Community Organization.

Marion County residents impacted by the recent flooding can access medical services and tetanus vaccinations today, August 24, at Riverwood Park. Mobile showers are also available August 24–25.

UPDATE: We are hosting special clinics offering a free tetanus vaccine to residents who were affected by recent flooding, especially in the Rocky Ripple and Ravenswood areas. No appointment is needed.

Tetanus vaccine will be offered at two locations:

Friday, Aug. 21
Riverwood Park, 7200 Crittenden Ave.
4-6 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 22
Hohlt Park, 840 W. 53rd St.
10 a.m.-noon

Exposure to contaminated floodwater and the hazards associated with cleanup after a flood, such as cuts or deep wounds in the skin, increase a person’s risk for tetanus. The vaccine is recommended for those who haven’t received a tetanus booster in the past ten years or if a person can’t remember the last time they had a tetanus booster.
