A little late in posting this but you know what they say. Better late than never. We would like to congratulate our February Employees of the Month. Mr. Chad Williams and Ms. Amanda Weber.

Mr. Williams has been with the department for a little over a year but has already become an invaluable member of our team. His knowledge of Fire and EMS ensures that the people he helps on the phone recieve the best possible assistance possible.

Ms. Weber is one of our more seasoned employees with almost 15 years of experience as a police control operator. She is always willing to help out on other shifts to help fill a position and ensure that we are staffed.

Both of these fine people have a passion to serve this city and it's citizens to the best of their abilities. We thank you for all you do.

We had a surprise visit from the wonderful people @ Bravee Inc. This group works w/ men struggling w/ mental health & provides free group counseling & mental health workshops for men. They were kind enough to deliver Longs Bakery donuts to our 911 center. Thank you so much. We will find nice home for them.

So today was a very busy day with some surprises for us. First off Motorola, who services our radio & CAD systems, brought in pizza from the oh so yummy Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza. Then the Target @ 6925 w 38th brought in a basket of snacks and bottled water. Next the Clinician-Led Community Response (CLCR), who's job is to lend assistance to those experiencing behavioral health crises in Indianapolis, surprised us with a box of decorated cookies. Just when we thought we were all done Pike Township Fire Department brought in some goodies for the Fire/EMS dispatchers that work so hard to keep them safe when on emergency runs for them. A big thank you to everyone that brought in these things for our hard working first responders.

For the 2nd day of Telecommunicator Week, we got all kinds of goodies. Longs Bakery provided donuts, we got Chic-Fil-A for meals, and RapidSOS sent us a giant box of snacks and goodies. We can't thank these companies enough for all the great snacks and food.

Yesterday we kicked off Telecommunicator Week with food catered by Chile Verde #2. They supplied the shifts with a fantastic taco bar with ground beef, shredded chicken, and carnitas. The carnitas were the winner in my opinion but I know everyone enjoyed the food. If you get the chance swing by there and enjoy some excellent Mexican food.

What is National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week (NPSTW)?

Every year during the second week of April, the telecommunications personnel at 911 dispatch centers across the country, are honored. This first NPSTW was initially celebrated in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California. The idea was to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public. It is a week that should be set aside so everyone can be made aware of their hard work and dedication.

It was officially turned into a week long event by then President Bill Clinton and Congress in 1994 for the 2nd week of April every year. Over the years it has grown and is celebrated not just in America but also Canada and other countries around the world.

Here in Marion County there are over 125 dispatcher working 24/7 365 to help keep the citizens of Indianapolis, along with police, firefighters, EMT's, and paramedics safe. We always answer the phone and help shine a light on your darkest day. We've been there to help deliver a new life into the world and listened as someone took their last breath. We've helped an officer get backup as he is chasing a suspect and we've had to help coordinate rescue efforts when a firefighter is injured fighting a fire.

In short a telecommunicator wears many hats and has multiple jobs to do depending on the situation. This year our theme is Game Night. Please join us this week as we celebrate those that are often heard but rarely seen. We are the voice in the darkness during your worst time and this is when we shine the brightest.

Today, we remember Officer Breann Leath. Officer Leath was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in the 1800 block Edinburge Square in Indianapolis shortly before 3:00 pm.

Officer Leath was a veteran of the National Guard and had served with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for three years. She is survived by her 9-year-old son, her father, a Marion County Sheriff's Office deputy, and her mother, who worked in the 911 dispatch center as a control operator, and two sisters who have worked in corrections.

The Indiana Women's Prison's nursery was renamed the Officer Breann Leath Maternal & Child Health Unit by Indiana's governor two weeks after her death.
