Why It’s “Women Veterans Recognition Day” – Not “Women Veterans Day”

On June 12th, we celebrate women Veterans and honor their incredible contributions, but it’s important to recognize the true meaning of the date and its official name.

June 12, 1948 marked a turning point in history: The signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act granted women the right to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces. That’s why we honor Women Veterans Recognition Day.

Today, and every day, let’s celebrate service, remember history, and continue to uplift stories.

Our office has received numerous calls about Veteran Flag holders coming up missing throughout cemeteries across Indiana County. Please note that it is a crime to take one of these. If you happen to come across any that are located in areas they shouldn't be, please call our office. 724-465-3815.

State and Federal Laws:

Federal Law: Under 38 U.S.C. Chap. 23, §2306(a), all government-furnished markers and associated holders remain the permanent property of the U.S. Government. Stealing them can result in federal charges for theft of government property. Additionally, the federal Veterans' Cemetery Protection Act of 1997 requires sentencing enhancements for offenses at national cemeteries.

State Penalties: Because the majority of military flag holders are stolen to be melted down and sold for their metal, state legislatures have heavily cracked down on this issue. Stealing, buying, or selling these markers often carries severe penalties. For example, under Pennsylvania Crimes and Offenses § 5509, the unauthorized removal, sale, or destruction of a veteran’s marker is charged as a misdemeanor, and in many jurisdictions, it can be escalated to felony mischief depending on the value of the stolen metal and property damage.

Today, on the 82nd Anniversary of D-Day, we honor the extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and determination of the Allied forces who stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. 🇫🇷

Their bravery changed the course of history and helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today. We remember the thousands who gave their lives and pay tribute to the veterans whose service and sacrifice helped bring victory in World War II.

As we reflect on this historic day, we remain committed to preserving their legacy and ensuring future generations never forget the heroes of the Greatest Generation.
