On World Su***de Prevention Day, we join advocates globally to champion an ongoing theme: Changing the Narrative on Su***de. 💬💙

Changing the narrative means moving away from a culture of silence and stigma toward one of deep understanding, connection, and hope.

Su***de is not inevitable—it is preventable. When we foster open, honest, and compassionate conversations, we build environments where every person feels safe reaching out for help.

To effectively protect our youth, we must also recognize the underlying factors that impact mental health. Children who have experienced trauma, abuse, or assault face a significantly higher risk for depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. Addressing trauma early through compassionate, specialized care is a vital component of su***de prevention.

Here is how we can work together to change the narrative:
🗣️ Talking openly about mental health and trauma helps break down shame. Offering patient, non-judgmental listening lets survivors know they are never alone.

🌱 Equipping children and young people with emotional resilience, coping strategies, and healthy boundary-setting gives them essential tools to navigate difficult experiences.

📞 Ensuring that crisis support is easily accessible. Help is available 24/7. Call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

☑️ PennCAC offers specialized training for professionals supporting children and families, building critical skills in trauma-informed responses and connecting youth to appropriate care.

As we honor Su***de Prevention Month, we are reminded: talking about su***de isn’t harmful — silence is. One honest conversation can be a turning point in someone’s life. Throughout this month, we will be sharing su***de prevention resources, many aimed specifically at helping parents, caregivers, and other trusted adults become more aware of child and teen mental health issues -- and how to help.

Here's a great place to start: https://www.nami.org/kids-teens-and-young-adults/school-resources/back-to-school-resources/ -resources
