As highlighted in the video accompanying this post, communities across the country are seeing a growing backlash against the illegal and unsafe operation of e-scooters, e-bikes, mopeds, and electric motorcycles. Serious crashes are increasing, and some states are exploring ways to hold parents accountable when juveniles operate these devices unlawfully or recklessly.
Here in Indian Head Park, we want to be very clear.
Parents and guardians are responsible for providing their children with food, clothing, shelter, education, and guidance. In todayโs world, that responsibility also extends to the technology and devices they place in their childrenโs hands.
Whether itโs a smartphone, gaming system, electric scooter, or e-bike, purchasing the device is only the beginning. Supervision, education, and accountability must follow.
Many of these products are not toys. Some exceed 30 miles per hour, while others are intended strictly for off-road use and are not legal on public streets, sidewalks, parks, or bike paths.
If your child is operating one of these devices illegally, โI didnโt knowโ will not undo a serious injury or eliminate the consequences that follow.
The Indian Head Park Police Department will continue to proactively address violations involving juveniles operating electric scooters and similar devices in violation of Village ordinances and Illinois law. Parents or guardians will be notified, citations may be issued, and devices may be impounded depending on the circumstances.
This is not about taking away summer fun. It is about preventing the knock on the door that no parent ever wants to receive.
Traffic laws still apply. Helmets still matter. Pedestrians still have the right of way. Accountability still exists.
Parents: Know what you are buying. Know where your children are riding. Know the rules before an officer has to explain them to you on the side of the road.
