Summer is nearly over, which means it's time for SPOOKY season! 👻 Kickstarting our Halloween festivities is the 6th Annual Kenton County Detention Center Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, Oct. 14!

This annual event brings together hundreds for a night of candy, food, music and fun. The party starts at 6:00 p.m. and you won't want to miss it.

Welcome to the team, Noah.

Please join us in welcoming Noah Bell to the Kenton County Police Department!

A graduate of Scott High School in Taylor Mill, Noah spent four years serving our country in the U.S. Marine Corps. Now, he is beginning the next chapter of his career as a Kenton County Police recruit.

Noah was officially sworn in during the Fiscal Court’s Aug. 25 meeting and will now begin law enforcement training. Once he completes his training, he will hit the streets ready to serve and protect the people of Kenton County.

Welcome to the team, Noah! We are excited to have you serving our community.

Every new officer at the Kenton County Police Department begins their career in our Patrol Unit. But before they head out on their own, there’s an important step in between.

After graduating from the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training academy, new officers complete 14 weeks of field training alongside experienced officers. During this time, they put their academy training into practice while their Field Training Officer evaluates their performance, provides guidance and helps prepare them for the responsibilities of working independently.

In this video, Field Training Coordinator Sgt. Charles Duncan explains what goes into developing the curriculum and selecting training officers. We also hear from Officer William Snider about why serving as a Field Training Officer is so rewarding.

Field training provides a strong foundation for new officers as they transition to working independently. Lateral officers also complete a modified field training program to help them become familiar with the Kenton County Police Department and our community.

Please see the announcement below from Kenton County regarding our chief position, including the timeline for when the role will be filled permanently.

On Tuesday, the Kenton County Fiscal Court approved Jim Gilpin as interim chief of the Kenton County Police Department, positioning a longtime KCPD leader to guide the agency through its upcoming transition.

Gilpin will succeed Chief Michael “Spike” Jones, who will depart the department on Friday, Sept. 11, after 11 years as chief.

A veteran of KCPD, Gilpin rejoined the department in January 2024 as assistant chief after retiring in 2019. He previously spent 20 years with the agency, rising through the ranks before being promoted to captain in 2015.

Gilpin’s appointment will provide continuity for the department as the County begins its search for Jones’ permanent successor.

During Tuesday’s Fiscal Court meeting, County Administrator Joe Shriver outlined the process for filling the position permanently. Applications are expected to open in mid-September, with the County targeting the end of October to complete the search and appoint a new chief.

Last Wednesday, Officer Thomas Britton received the Occupant Restraint Governor's Award. This award recognizes outstanding commitment to seat belt and child restraint enforcement, education and community outreach.

Traffic enforcement is about more than citations. It’s about preventing injuries, saving lives and helping people make it home safely to their families.

Officer Britton was among more than 120 state and local law enforcement recognized for their commitment to safety through seat belt and child passenger enforcement.

This snapshot gives us a look at both the officers and patrol vehicles from years ago. While patrol vehicles have changed quite a bit over the years, they have always been an important part of law enforcement.

Meet Officer Brandon Markesbery, who is serving St. Joseph's School.

Officer Markesbery has been in law enforcement for 24 years and is ready to start the school year off strong! His favorite part of being a SRO is creating a safe environment for children to learn and seeing their smiles everyday around campus.

School Resource Officers are critical piece of our community. They help create a safe and secure learning environment, building trust between students, staff and law enforcement. Their presence allows for quicker responses to emergencies, while also providing mentorship and education on safety, conflict resolution, and responsible decision-making. Meet Officer Matt Lambert, who is serving Saint Agnes School this year.

Officer Lambert has 30 years of law enforcement experience and is starting his second year as an SRO. When asked why he loves being an SRO, he shared "I believe I have learned as much from the students as they hopefully have from me. It makes me feel confident in the success of our future with these students attending Saint Agnes School."

Meet Officer Chad Irwin, who is serving Twenhofel Middle School this school year.

Officer Irwin has 30 years of law enforcement experience and has been a SRO for 8 years after retiring from the Florence Police Department. He's most excited to connect with school staff, students and families throughout this year.
