A thunderstorm is currently moving into western Montgomery County and is producing heavy rainfall and winds of 20 to 40 mph.

The storm is moving east-southeast at approximately 20 mph and will continue to track across the area this morning.

Motorists should use caution if traveling, as periods of heavy rain may reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways.

Please continue to monitor weather conditions and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

A strong thunderstorm has moved north of Independence, but another cluster of storms is slowly approaching our area. These storms are expected to move through this morning before conditions improve and skies begin to clear for much of the day.

⚠️ However, additional rounds of thunderstorms are possible this evening and continuing through early Monday morning.

Potential hazards include:
• Strong winds
• Heavy rainfall and localized flooding
• Hail

Residents are encouraged to remain weather aware and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including weather radios, mobile alerts, local media, and trusted weather apps.

The City of Independence is currently under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 5:15 AM.

⚠️ Expected hazards include:
• Wind gusts up to 60 mph
• Heavy rainfall
• Potential for localized flooding

Due to the threat of excessive rainfall, our area is also under a Flash Flood Watch.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northern Montgomery County.

A line of strong thunderstorms is moving into the northwest corner of Montgomery County and will continue moving across the area tonight.

Primary threats with these storms include:
💨 Damaging winds up to 70 mph
🌧️ Heavy rainfall that could lead to localized flooding

Residents are encouraged to remain weather aware and be prepared to take shelter if conditions worsen or additional warnings are issued.

Please continue to monitor trusted weather sources and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including Wireless Emergency Alerts, weather apps, local media, and NOAA Weather Radio.

If you encounter water-covered roadways, Turn Around, Don't Drown®. Never drive through flooded roads.

⚠️ City of Independence Weather Update – Saturday, June 13, 2026 ⚠️

The National Weather Service has issued both a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and a Flash Flood Watch for Montgomery County.

A cold front moving across Kansas will bring a line of thunderstorms through Southeast Kansas this evening, with storms expected to continue through approximately 11:00 p.m.

Primary threats include:
💨 Damaging winds up to 70 mph
🌧️ Heavy rainfall and localized flooding

While the main concerns are strong winds and heavy rain, an isolated tornado and large hail cannot be ruled out.

Please be prepared:
✔️ Have multiple ways to receive weather watches and warnings, including weather radios, smartphone alerts, local media, and trusted weather apps.
✔️ Stay weather aware throughout the evening.
✔️ Secure outdoor items that could be blown around by strong winds.
✔️ If you encounter flooded roadways, Turn Around, Don't Drown®. Never drive through water-covered roads. The depth and condition of the roadway beneath the water are often impossible to determine.

The National Weather Service has placed Independence and Montgomery County under a Flood Watch until 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

There is also a risk for severe thunderstorms this evening, with the potential for all modes of severe weather, including:

🌪️ Tornadoes possible
💨 Damaging winds of 60–80 mph
🧊 Large hail up to 1–2 inches in diameter
🌧️ Heavy rainfall and localized flooding

Current forecasts indicate the cold front and strongest storms could move through Southeast Kansas between 8:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.

Please be prepared:
✔️ Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and alerts (NOAA Weather Radio, Wireless Emergency Alerts, local media, and trusted weather apps).
✔️ Review your severe weather safety plan before storms arrive.
✔️ Charge mobile devices and keep flashlights readily available.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Montgomery County through Sunday.

There is a chance of thunderstorms overnight tonight, but our primary weather threat is expected Saturday evening through Sunday. Forecasts indicate the potential for all modes of severe weather, including:

⛈️ 2–4 inches of rainfall
💨 Wind gusts of 60–80 mph
🧊 Golf ball-sized hail
🌪️ Possible severe thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes

Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including NOAA Weather Radio, local media, weather apps, and emergency notifications.

Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown. Never drive through flooded roadways. It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle away.

Independence is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9:00 PM tonight.

A cold front is moving through Southeast Kansas, and storms are expected to develop along the front as it moves southeast. These storms may produce:

Update on the new Engine 3. As equipment comes in we will be working to get the truck in service and ready to run calls. We ultimately dont want to rush it, as we want to outfit it to serve the citizens in the best way possible. Once its in service we plan on doing a ceremony of some sort to celebrate the new truck and do another open house at the FD to show you all where these men and women spend a 1/3 or more of their lives. Be watching for updates!!!
