The Town of Independence, Virginia is looking for motivated, interested, and qualified town citizens to enter the upcoming Council and Mayoral elections to be held on November 3, 2026.

For those who are considering the opportunity, you must register by the

Deadline -Tuesday, June 16, 2026. This can be accomplished two ways:

1) In-Person - Packets with the required two documents are available at the Director of Elections & General Registrar's office located in Room 101 of the lower level of the Grayson County Administrative & Courthouse Building at 129 Davis Street, Independence, VA.

2) Online - go to Virginia Department of Elections (https.;//www.electjons.virgLoia,gov) -tap the three bars in the upper left corner and from the drop down box select "Candidate/PAC Info" -then select "Candidate Forms" - under "Local Offices" Select: SBE 501(4) "Certificate of Candidate Qualification" and "ELECT 505/520 - Declaration of Candidacy". Print, fill out, and return both forms to the location in #1 above before the deadline listed above.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Pursuant to the Code of Virginia sections 15.2-107, 1102, 1104, 2503, and 2506 the Independence Town Council will hold a Public Hearing Tuesday June 9, 2026, 6:00 pm, at the Independence Fire Department located at 329 Davis St., Independence, VA to take comment on the 2026-2027 Governmental budget of $1,226,186 and Utilities budget of $2,062,022. The current tax rates, water and sewer rates remain the same as previous year.

A copy of the proposed budget is available for public review at the Town Office Monday through Friday 9am to 4pm.

ANNOUNCING NEW TOWN MANAGER

The Town Of Independence Town Council would like to welcome the new Town Manager.

Alan "Big Al" Dickerson began his tenure as Town Manager of Independence, VA on April 1, 2026. He is a lifelong resident of Galax, VA and a graduate of Virginia Tech. He has previously served as Controller for Nautilus, Director of Finance for CompAir Kellogg, and Chief Financial Officer for Independence Lumber. Prior to his current position, Alan was the Interim President/Chief Financial Officer with the Bank of Floyd prior to the merger with Grayson National Bank, which is now Skyline National Bank.

"I am excited by the opportunity and look forward to serving the Town of Independence and its citizens. Due to my prior professional experience, I am familiar with the community and know several of the residents."

In his spare time, Alan is an avid life-long Virginia Tech football fan.
