Have you been curious about what our officers have been up to all month? The Independence Police Department is sharing a sample of the calls for service each month to inform and educate community members on the work we do.
In May 2026, officers engaged in 1,073 activities. These included 31 arrests (adults and juveniles), 18 welfare checks, 27 domestic disturbances, 6 hit-and-run crashes, 15 emotional health calls, and 77 suspicious activity/person/vehicle calls. The activities listed above represent just a portion of the calls to which officers respond. Other incidents may include resident contact calls, tows, attempts to locate, assistance to other agencies, crashes, and other service requests.
MAY 2026
-Officers responded to a report of a suspected intoxicated driver after receiving a vehicle description and license plate information. The suspect vehicle was located at the registered owner’s address with the driver seated inside. An investigation led to the driver's arrest for DUII. The driver later provided a breath sample showing a .22% blood alcohol content and was lodged at the Polk County Jail.
-Multiple 911 callers reported a suspicious male trespassing in yards, yelling at traffic, and causing motorists to swerve. Officers contacted the individual, who appeared impaired and was found with a substance that tested positive for presumptive presence of methamphetamine. The suspect was charged with disorderly conduct, parole violation, criminal trespass, and unlawful possession of methamphetamine (see photo).
-Officers investigated a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex where a victim reported being restrained during an argument, forced into a vehicle, and prevented from calling 911. The victim reported being physically assaulted and spat on during the incident. The suspect was arrested on charges including kidnapping, harassment, coercion, and interference with making a report.
-A camp host reported that two juveniles attempted to take a city utility vehicle for a joyride and left with the key. Video footage assisted officers in identifying one of the suspects, who was later located and taken into juvenile custody.
-A healthcare worker reported suspected domestic violence after a patient disclosed being choked and physically assaulted. Following an investigation, probable cause was developed, and the suspect was arrested for attempted strangulation and assault.
-Officers responded to reports of two women fighting in a parking lot and found one of the involved parties intoxicated and holding the other person on the ground by the hair. Witness statements supported an arrest for disorderly conduct, and the suspect was taken to jail.
-Officers conducted a welfare check involving concerns of child abuse. The child reported being forced into a chair and struck with a belt. Following the investigation, the suspect was arrested on a felony-level assault charge and transported to jail.
