Ever wonder what it takes to keep a city running?

The Citizens Academy is an eight-week behind-the-scenes look at the City of Independence.

Each week highlights a different City department, the people behind our City services, what they do, and how it all comes together to serve our community.

And this isn't just classroom learning. Previous classes have included riding in the bucket of a fire truck, Police K-9 demonstrations, and VIP tours of the City’s water plant and other facilities.

So, what is IndeCleanup?

Sept. 27–Oct. 4, we’re bringing neighbors, community partners, and City resources together for Love Where You Live: IndeCleanup, one week of cleanup projects across Independence.

There will be plenty of ways to participate, from volunteering in parks and along streets to clearing unwanted items from your own home.

We’ll share more dates, locations, and details next week. But you don’t have to wait to get started; volunteer registration is open now.

Today, Independence joins communities across the country in marking the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

Across our community, people have gathered to remember and reflect, including this morning's service at the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum to last weekend's Kansas City 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

Members of our City Council, City staff, and the Police and Fire departments have been honored to take part in these community memorials.

If you are still looking for an opportunity to get together and reflect, join us tonight at Independence Uptown Market beginning at 6:30 PM for a memorial service.

Thank you to the organizers of this week's events. We appreciate the opportunity to reflect and carry this day's significance forward.

Independence is choosing its next Chief of Police, and we want you to be a part of the process.

Meet the four finalists at a community meet-and-greet on Thursday, September 24 at the Midwest Genealogy Center.

The open house will give residents, community leaders, and stakeholders a chance to meet candidates, ask questions, and share perspectives before a final decision is made.

Today was a big step in expanding behavioral health care in Eastern Jackson County.

City Council and staff joined today's groundbreaking for Three Trails Behavioral Hospital near I-70 and Little Blue Parkway.

The new $60M+, 120-bed hospital will serve patients of all ages with inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services, while bringing approximately 200 jobs.

Thank you to Universal Health Services, Inc. - UHS and the project partners for including us in today's celebration.

Each year, our firefighters participate in the Kansas City 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

Thank you to the organization for including us each year, and to our firefighters who show up, climb 110 flights of stairs, and honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11th, 25 years ago.

Last weekend's storm was short, but it packed a punch.

At the peak, more than 5,300 IPL customers were without power, with crews responding to 100+ outages. Thank you to our crews who continue to work to restore power.

And we know there's more work to do.

To help with storm debris cleanup, the City of Independence will offer a free limb drop-off for residents on Saturday, Sept. 12th, from 8AM - 3PM during our normal Drop-off Depot.

Today is National 988 Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about su***de prevention and mental health resources.

Call or text 988 or chat online with the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline to connect with a trained crisis counselor for immediate support.

Here in Independence, we want you to feel connected and supported.

Our ARCH mobile response program pairs paramedics + social workers to respond to crisis calls and connect residents to care.

Health Services offers youth mental health programs, Mental Health First Aid training, and an online community resource guide.

Police and Fire provide peer support and crisis-trained professionals, caring for both the public and their own teams.

Parks and Recreation offer programs and opportunities to connect, from chess at George Owens Nature Park to senior programs at Palmer Center.

It’s okay to need help. And if you do, there are resources right here in our community.

❤️ Our hearts are with every vendor affected by last night's storm. The festival may have been cut short, but our support doesn’t have to be.

Severe weather brought an unexpected early end to the festival portion of SantaCaliGon Days, leaving many of the incredible small businesses, makers, artists and food vendors without an important day of sales.

So let’s do what Independence does best: show up for our community.
