Mark your calendars, because the Summer Reading Kickoff Party will take place on Saturday, May 30th, here at Trails West!

We are thrilled to welcome back a pallet of books that ended up in the Cayman Islands by mistake in December. 😲🏝️

The pallet spent a few weeks in the sun and sand, then stayed in Atlanta for a couple of months, missing the Midwest winter. After a quick stop in Nashville for spring break, the pallet finally made it back to Kansas City, and we’re happy to have it home. 📚

On this day in 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks made history by becoming the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize! She received the award for her second book of poetry, Annie Allen, which provided a lyrical and technical look at the life of a young Black girl growing up in Chicago. Brooks' achievement marked a turning point in American literature, breaking racial barriers and solidifying her legacy as one of the most influential voices in 20th-century poetry.
