Many thanks to our area professionals and FFA chapters who donated their time and expertise to present safety education at Heartland Acres for over 200 Buchanan County second graders on May 14th.

During this annual event, students rotate with their classes through 12 different safety sessions including Ambulance, Healthy Choices, Grain, Tractor/PTO, Electrical, Railroad, Chemical, Hidden Hazards, First Aid, Fire, Sun, Roadway, and Stranger Danger. Participating schools include Independence, East Buchanan, Independence St. John’s, Jesup, and St Athanasius in Jesup.

Presenters who helped make this possible were Jolene Kaiser and Aubree Blanco, Griffin Hickey, Jesup FFA, Independence FFA, Andrew McGuire, Francis Edeker, Oelwein FFA, Wapsie Valley FFA, Brianna Kennett and MacKenzie Goodman, John Butler, Andrew Roamn, Richard Newton, and Tanner Erickson-Dale, East Buchanan FFA, and Corey Hartmann and McKinley Rans.

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Buchanan County offers the annual Progressive Agriculture Safety Day each year. It is designed to empower youth with practical safety knowledge so they can protect themselves and others in farm, ranch, and rural settings, while fostering a community-wide commitment to safety.

At the conclusion of the day, participants receive a goodie bag with the contents donated from local businesses and organizations. Thank you to BankIowa, Buchanan County Health Center, East Central Iowa Rural Electric Coop, Geater Machining & Manufacturing, Iowa Farm Bureau, Kegler, Kegler, and Arend DDS, Operation Lifesaver, Pipestone Vet Services, Buchanan County Public Health, Substance Use Prevention Coalition, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department, Tim Reed State Farm Insurance, and Independence Fire Department. Members of the Buchanan County Hospital Auxiliary volunteer to stuff the bags for the participants.

If you are showing beef, dairy cattle, dairy goat, poultry, rabbit, sheep, or swine, you need to have taken Youth for the Quality Care of Animals. There is only two weeks to get your certificates to the Extension Office.
