The Independence Police Department stopped by the Independence Fire Department City of Independence Iowa, Fire Department to present Chief Hayward with 9/11 memorial pins for the Fire Department’s officers.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of that tragic day in our nation’s history. A total of 343 firefighters and 71 police officers made the ultimate sacrifice while answering the call to save countless lives.

It is estimated that more than 25,000 lives were saved because of the unwavering bravery and dedication of these first responders.

The Independence Police Department, along with the Independence Fire Department, extends our deepest gratitude for their service and sacrifice. We will never forget those who gave their lives that day, and we continue to hold them, their families, and all those affected in our thoughts and prayers.

As some of you may have noticed while walking through our downtown area, new signs have been added at the sidewalk approaches as you enter our downtown business district. These signs are here to help alert pedestrians to City Ordinances 76 and 77 and, most importantly, help keep everyone safe.

🛴🚲 If you have wheels, be sure to walk them while using the sidewalks! Riding on the roadway is permitted, provided you do so in accordance with the law.

Parents, with school quickly approaching, please help us by talking with your kiddos about these rules and staying safe while enjoying our downtown! 😎🛴🚲

On Monday August 10th our newest officer, Officer Brock Barnhart was sworn in by Mayor Bleichner. Officer Barnhart started his career in 2023 working for the City of Jesup before joining us. If you happen to see Officer Barnhart out and about, feel free to welcome him to our great community!

We here at the Independence Police Department want to express our sincere gratitude to the Buchanan County Community Foundation for helping our department provide updated replacement vests for our officers.

The police department was awarded a $5,162.50 grant from the Community Foundation to assist with this important purchase. Combined with funding from another grant, these funds will help ensure our officers have the protective equipment they need to stay safe while continuing to provide service to our great community!

Thank you to the Buchanan County Community Foundation for your generous support of the Independence Police Department and our officers! We truly appreciate your investment in the safety of those who serve our community.
