Furry Friday Rescue 🦝

Earlier today, City of Independence Iowa, Police Department took a report of a small Raccoon trapped under a debris cover in a water-filled ditch. Officers requested assistance from Independence Fire with some tools and equipment. On scene, they found this little guy in a tight spot, literally!

With water levels rising from the recent rains, crews quickly jumped into action, removing the debris cover, allowing our furry friend a clear exit.

The little guy seemed very appreciative of the assist and gave us a quick 👋🏻 to both departments before heading for higher ground to dry off. Crews were able to secure the debris cover and cleared the scene as the raccoon refused any medical treatment or snacks.

Please be advised that Parking Lot 1, also known as the St. John's Parking Lot (shown on the attached map), will be closed for rehabilitation beginning Monday, June 8th. For reference, Lot 1 is located north of 2nd Street NE, situated between 3rd Avenue NE and 4th Avenue NE.

This work will only affect the eastern half of this lot, and will not affect the area in front of Kegler, Kegler, & Arend Dentistry.

We expect the rehabilitation work to be completed by the end of the week, pending favorable weather conditions.

We appreciate the community's patience and cooperation as we work to maintain and improve our downtown infrastructure. Please plan your parking accordingly and utilize other available municipal lots during this brief closure.

Today, the Independence Fire Department would like to recognize two groups that are always there when our community needs them most.

We would like to wish the members of the Independence Police Department and the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office a very happy National Donut Day! While the donut jokes may never end, we appreciate the dedication, professionalism, and service that our law enforcement partners provide to the citizens of Independence and Buchanan County every day.

Whether we're working together on emergencies, community events, traffic incidents, or critical incidents, we are proud to stand alongside these men and women in serving and protecting our community.

We are honored to be part of such a great project! Special Thanks to Officer Wilson for all his work behind the scenes as well as 319 Social House for hosting the event!

Our community is on a mission to give back to our students!

On Monday, June 1, 2026, 319 Social House hosted the 3rd annual Guns vs. Hoses Bowling Tournament.

The proceeds raised are split between school districts to help clear up negative lunch balances.

We are so thankful for the continued generosity of our community!
