Senior goodbyes and speeches today! These two amazing and dedicated young women have been role models on the team for the last four years. It's not a full goodbye yet though, because in a few weeks, Audrey Kaiser and Makenna Larimore headed to NATIONALS!

On this day in history, April 28, 1930, something incredible happened right here in Independence…

The very first night game in Organized Baseball was played under the lights at Shulthis Stadium!

That night, the Independence Producers took the field against the Muskogee Chiefs, forever changing the game we love. What started as an experiment lit the way (literally!) for modern baseball, making night games a staple across ballparks everywhere.

From a small town in southeast Kansas to stadiums across the country, Independence made history that still shines bright today.

⚾ Here’s to the moment that turned the lights on for baseball, and put Independence on the map!

🎠 We Want to Hear from Our Community! 🎠

Riverside Park, often called the jewel of Independence, and its nickel carousel—just one of many iconic features—along with the Ralph Mitchell Zoo, reflect the vision of citizens who planned for the Independence we enjoy today. So does Historic Memorial Hall, which honors our Veterans and stands as a lasting reminder of thoughtful leadership and community investment.

Now it’s our turn.

The Community-Based Strategic Plan will set priorities for the entire city—helping determine where we focus our time, resources, and investment in infrastructure and public safety; economic development that supports local businesses and industries; housing and neighborhood revitalization; our historic downtown; key assets like the Independence Municipal Airport; and the parks, public facilities, and services residents rely on every day.

📍 Attend a Session:
• Wednesday, March 4 | 5:30 PM | Civic Center (Memorial Hall)
• Friday, March 6 | 9:00 AM | Memorial Hall – Upstairs Lobby
410 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE TEAM CLAIMS 4TH PLACE AT STATE

Independence High School’s Peyton Connors and Audrey Kaiser advanced to the quarterfinal round and earned fourth overall at the Kansas 4A State Debate Championship in Coffeyville on Saturday.

The team finished the state meet with an impressive 5–2 record.

This performance marks the highest state placement for Independence Debate in the past 15 years.

“Peyton and Audrey worked incredibly hard all season,” said coach Halle Connors. “Their success at State represents not just individual achievement, but the strength and upward momentum of our entire program. We could not be more proud of their performance.”

Also representing IHS at the state meet was the team of Isabelle Martinez and Sophie Ballew.

They don't do it for the glory, the fame, the hours upon hours of meetings or the frequent phone calls. They certainly don't do it for the $0 paycheck. They do it because they have a heart for their community, a desire to see Independence thrive and its citizens live their best lives.

We're not sure they hear "thank you" quite enough, so the annual reorganization of the Independence City Commission (which officially took place at the January 8 meeting) is the perfect time.

Thank you to:
- Out-going Commissioner TIM EMERT, who served the past four years;
- Incoming newly elected Commissioner TIM WHITE;
- Commissioner and immediate past Mayor SCOTT SMITH;
- and Commissioner and newly appointed for his second stint as Mayor DEAN HAYSE

Thank you for your service, Gentlemen. Your dedication to our community is recognized and appreciated.
