MU-11 is in Oregon for Navy Week Salem! 🇺🇸⚓️

10/25/2022

EOD Mobile Unit 11 mourns the loss of one of our finest: EODCS Josh “JC” Christy passed away early this morning at UCSD Medical Center with his wife, Stirling, and brother, Travis, by his side. JC passed after his journey with an aggressive form of brain cancer diagnosed four months after returning from a deployment to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command area of responsibility.

Josh touched so many lives throughout the Navy and Army Special Operations communities with his sense of humor and personal devotion to mission. He was a dedicated warrior, husband, father, son and friend. JC would not only be the first to step up and lead, but also the first to listen and provide an opportunity to make you smile. It was our honor and privilege to serve alongside such an amazing man.

Born in April of 1986 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Josh grew up traveling the world and became an Eagle Scout. He joined the Navy in 2006, and rapidly made it through boot camp and the Navy EOD pipeline. Josh arrived at EOD Mobile Unit 3 in 2008, and quickly deployed to Iraq with the 5th Special Forces Group. Over a 16-year career, he deployed five more times, supporting Naval Special Warfare, Army Special Forces, and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Expeditionary Mine Countermeasures Companies at EOD Mobile Units 3 and 11. He also served as an instructor at Naval School EOD.

JC was awarded three Bronze Stars, one with a “V” Device signifying valor; an Army Commendation Medal; a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal; two Combat Action Ribbons; an Iraq Campaign Medal; an Afghanistan Campaign Medal; and an Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal.

Josh was a loving and devoted husband of seven years to Stirling, and father to 4-year-old Jack and 2-year-old Murphy. One of JC’s favorite hobbies was distilling his personal recipes of rum and bourbon, which he sold through his own company.

Funeral and memorial arrangements will be sent in the coming days. While the family anticipates an outpouring of support, please respect their privacy during this trying time.

The family has set up a page to facilitate sharing pictures and memories of Josh. You can request to join the page at the following link. This will allow you to share your photos and stories as we celebrate JC’s life and the impact he had on all of us.

EOD Warriors and Family,
The Navy's first Mine Disposal class graduated 79 years ago today in 1941, signifying the birth of what is now the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community. These World War II Mine and Bomb Disposal personnel were among the first to land on European and Pacific beaches, quickly clearing channels and harbors to provide critical access to Allied landing forces.
As the Mine and Bomb Disposal units evolved into today’s Navy EOD community, the force has maintained its courage and innovation in facing new emerging threats – from sea mines blocking Wonsan Harbor during the Korean War, to land and sea mines hindering American maneuverability during the Vietnam War, to today combating limpet and sea mines targeting naval and commercial ships in the Arabian Gulf.
Today’s operators continue to honor the legacy of our predecessors by advancing Navy EOD’s capabilities to build the toughest force for the future. This drive maintains our ability to support theater commanders in conducting Littoral Operations in Contested Environments, Distributed Maritime Operations and Expeditionary Advanced Basing Operations to meet the challenges of Great Power Competition in a changing world.
Navy EOD - comprised of elite, professional warfighters - remains a lethal and resilient force that can be applied in contingency and crisis operations across the globe. We are Navy EOD! And we eliminate explosive threats so our Fleet and Nation can fight and win - whenever, wherever, and however we choose.
To the nearly 2,000 active duty Navy EOD operators and our countless veterans, happy 79th birthday!
Sincerely,
Capt. Rick Hayes and Capt. Oscar Rojas
