Igiugig Village Council

Igiugig Village Council The Sovereign Native Village of Igiugig is a Tribe in SW Alaska with strong values drawn from our Yup'ik, Sugpiaq, Dena’ina, and Unangax̂ peoples.

We work for a prosperous future while respecting the lands and waters that sustain us. The Sovereign Native Village of Igiugig is a self-sufficient community and Federally recognized Tribe located in southwestern Alaska. The word Igiugig–Igyaraq in the Yup’ik language–means, "like a throat that swallows water," a name clearly derived from the location of the Village, where Lake Iliamna drains into the Kvichak River. Igiugig has strong cultural and environmental values drawn from its Yup'ik/Yupiaq, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq, Dena’ina, and Unangax̂/Aleut peoples. These values and a commitment to self-determination underpin the work of the Igiugig Village Council, which strives to create a prosperous present and future for the community while living in respectful relationship with the lands and waters that have supported their ways of life for millennia. This work is guided not only by a vision of a thriving rural Alaska community, but by a recognition that what is good for Igiugig is good for the region, the state, the nation, and the world. In addition to providing essential services and infrastructure for the community, Igiugig Village Council has embraced technological innovation alongside Indigenous Knowledge, expanding the vision of what is possible for remote communities in Alaska and beyond.
