Idyllwild Fire Protection District is joins the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in recognizing Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on preventing lithium-ion battery fires through safe everyday charging habits.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use daily, including phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes and scooters.

Follow these simple safety tips to help prevent fires:

🔌 Use approved chargers. Always use the charger provided by the manufacturer or an approved replacement.

🚫 🛋️ 🛏️ Charge on hard surfaces. Avoid charging devices on beds, couches or other soft surfaces that can trap heat.

⚠️ Watch for warning signs. Stop using devices that become unusually hot, swell, leak, smoke or make strange noises.

🔌 Unplug when fully charged. Avoid leaving devices charging unnecessarily.

🔋 Charge larger batteries outdoors when possible. Keep e-bikes, scooters and power tools away from exits and escape routes.

✅ Choose certified products. Look for nationally recognized safety certifications such as UL, ETL or CSA.

Small changes in charging habits can make a big difference in protecting your home and family.

Today is National Fire Pup Day, a day recognizing the long history of dogs serving alongside the fire service.

Meet Kutsch, IFPD’s pup. Kutsch provides companionship and support to our firefighters and personnel.

Kutsch also joins us at many of our community events and trainings, so if you see him out and about, be sure to stop by and say hi!

Happy National Fire Pup Day, Kutsch!

9/11. Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001. A day that forever changed our nation.

Idyllwild Fire Protection District joins communities across the country in remembering the 2,977 individuals who lost their lives that day at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93.

As members of the fire service, we especially honor the 343 FDNY firefighters who answered the call and made the ultimate sacrifice that day.

We also remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, rescue workers, volunteers, and others who worked at ground zero in the days and months that followed. For many, that service came at a tremendous cost, with hundreds losing their lives in the years since to cancers and other illnesses linked to their work in the rescue and recovery efforts.

Twenty-five years later, we remember those who were lost, those who ran toward danger to help others, and the families who continue to carry their loss.

We will never forget.

Today, we honor U.S. Forest Service firefighter Nathan Matthews, who succumbed to injuries sustained during the Knowles Fire burnover in western Colorado.

Nathan was one of five firefighters involved in the tragic burnover on June 27. He is the fourth firefighter to lose his life following the incident, joining Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson.

We continue to keep all of those affected by this tragedy in our thoughts, including the families, friends, the R***e Helitack crew, and everyone across the wildland fire community.

Today we celebrate our nation and the freedoms we all cherish. As we gather with family and friends, we also recognize the military members and first responders who help keep our communities safe.

This Independence Day is especially meaningful as Idyllwild Fire Protection District proudly celebrates 80 years of service to our mountain community. Since 1946, generations of firefighters, volunteers, board members, and staff have answered the call to protect lives, property, and the place we call home.

As you celebrate today, please remember that all fireworks including “safe and sane” fireworks are ILLEGAL in Idyllwild and throughout Riverside County. The safest way to celebrate is by enjoying a professional fireworks display from a permitted location.

Thank you for allowing us to serve this incredible community for the past 80 years. Here’s to honoring our past, protecting our future, and wishing everyone a safe and happy Independence Day!

🇺🇸 Happy Fourth of July from your Idyllwild Fire Protection District! 🚒

Today, on National Wildland Firefighter Day, we pause to recognize the men and women who answer the call to protect lives, communities, and our natural landscapes. Their work is demanding, often unseen, and requires courage, dedication, and sacrifice.

This year’s observance carries even greater meaning. We honor the memory of the three wildland firefighters who recently lost their lives on the Knowles Fire, and we remember all who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

As we observe the Week of Remembrance, we also reflect on two tragedies that forever shaped the wildland fire community: the 13th anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire, where 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots gave their lives, and the 20th anniversary of the Esperanza Fire, which claimed the lives of five firefighters on Engine 57 - our friends - from the San Bernardino National Forest.

From all of us at Idyllwild Fire Protection District, we honor those we’ve lost, support those still on the line, and remain committed to carrying their legacy forward.
