Governor Polis Orders Flag to Fly at Half-Staff in Honor of Former Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell on Day of Memorial

DENVER — Today, Governor Jared Polis announced that flags will be lowered to half-staff on all public buildings statewide from sunrise to sunset on Monday, April 13, 2026, to honor the former United States Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell on the day of his memorial.

“Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell served in uniform, in the Colorado state house, the U.S House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and on the 1964 Olympics judo team, representing Colorado with compassion and devotion. His commitment to addressing the issues that Coloradans care most about through bipartisanship and his leadership to strengthen tribal relations made Colorado and the nation stronger," said Governor Polis.

Governor Polis previously announced that flags would be lowered on the day of the service to mark the Senator’s passing. In that initial announcement, Governor Polis reflected on Senator Campbell’s legacy as a public servant, veteran, and Olympic athlete, noting that his contributions leave a lasting legacy to the state and nation.

The public memorial service is scheduled to take place on April 13, 2026 at the Sky Ute Event Center in Ignacio, beginning at 1 pm.

Eighty-four years have passed, yet the echo of that morning still trembles through history. On December 7, 1941, silence was shattered, innocence was lost, and heroes were forged in fire and steel. In the smoke and chaos of Pearl Harbor, ordinary Americans rose with extraordinary courage, sailors, soldiers, nurses, and civilians who stood their ground with nothing but bravery in their hearts.

Many never came home. Others carried the weight of that day for a lifetime. Yet all left behind a legacy written in sacrifice, honor, and unbreakable resolve.

Today, we bow our heads in solemn remembrance. We grieve for the fallen. We honor the survivors. And we promise, across generations and time, that their courage will never be forgotten.

They gave everything so that we could live free.
We remember. We honor. We carry them forward.
December 7, 1941, Forever in our hearts.🕊️🇺🇸

Out of Respect for the Passing of former Vice President Dick Cheney, Flags will be lowered on day of this passing for 10 days.

Although the President has not signed the Proclamation yet, in accordance with the US Flag Code, Flags should be lowered immediately through sunset on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

In accordance with 4 USC Ch 1, Sec. 7 (m)
(m) The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to
the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag
should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On
Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then
raised to the top of the staff. By order of the President, the flag shall be
flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States
Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of
respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or
foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to
Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs
or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present
or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of
the United States, the death of a member of the Armed Forces from any State,

with respect to present or former officials of the District of Columbia,
members of the Armed Forces from the District of Columbia, and first responders
working in the District of Columbia. When the Governor of a State, territory,
or possession, or the Mayor of the District of Columbia, issues a proclamation
under the preceding sentence that the National flag be flown at half-staff in
that State, territory, or possession or in the District of Columbia because of
the death of a member of the Armed Forces, the National flag flown at any
Federal installation or facility in the area covered by that proclamation shall
be flown at half-staff consistent with that proclamation. The flag shall be flown at
half-staff 30 days from the death of the President or a former
President; 10 days from
the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired
Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of
Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice
of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a
former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession;
and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress. The
flag shall be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day, unless that
day is also Armed Forces Day. As used in this subsection—
(1) the term "half-staff" means the
position of the flag when it is one-half the distance between the top and
bottom of the staff;

Governor Polis Orders Flags to Half-Staff to Honor the Anniversary of September 11th and the Passing of Charlie Kirk

DENVER - Today, Governor Polis ordered flags to half-staff in honor of the victims of the September 11th terrorist attack, and released the following statement. Governor Polis ordered flags to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, September 11, 2025.

“Almost a quarter of a century ago, the safety and security of the United States was shaken like never before. While the bedrock of our nation is forever changed, America continues to grow stronger and more resilient. On 9/11, we remember the 2,976 souls lost that tragic day, honor the first responders who ran toward the danger to help others, and mourn with the families who still have an empty seat at the dinner table,” said Colorado Governor Jared Polis.

As directed by President Trump, flags will stay at half-staff until sunset on Sunday, September 14, 2025 to honor Charlie Kirk who was shot and killed today while speaking at Utah Valley University.

Read Governor Polis Statement on the passing of Charlie Kirk:

“Political violence is never acceptable and I condemn the brutal and inexcusable attack on Charlie Kirk in Utah. This is a challenging time for so many in our country, but any divisions we face will never be solved by trying to hurt each other. I am sending hope and love to his friends and his family in this dark hour. I encourage everyone to be stronger and disagree better and peacefully.”

Read President Trump’s Proclamation

As a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, September 14, 2025. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.

DONALD J. TRUMP

Flags Lowered on Thursday, May 15

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

On Peace Officers Memorial Day and during Police Week, we honor our brave officers who serve on the front lines to protect our families, safeguard our communities, and shoulder a burden of responsibility that most Americans cannot fathom. This week and always, we honor the courageous men and women serving in law enforcement and memorialize those who sacrificed their lives defending the thin blue line.
A nation in chaos ceases to be a citadel of liberty. Tragically, the previous administration allowed lawlessness to permeate our country, making it harder for our law enforcement officers to do their jobs. Their reckless, soft-on-crime policies emboldened criminals and thugs; wreaked havoc on the sanctity of our homes, businesses, and public spaces; instilled fear; and jeopardized public trust.
As your 47th President, I am fulfilling my promise to make America safe again by reclaiming sovereignty on the border and restoring the rule of law in communities nationwide. We will utilize every available means to equip and train law enforcement, retain qualified officers, and recruit on the basis of meritocracy.
The oath to serve and protect comes with extraordinary risk and sacrifice, and we are indebted to those who choose this righteous profession. That is why I have asked the Congress to codify my Executive Order mandating the death penalty for the murder of a police officer — sending an unequivocal message that barbaric acts of violence and blatant disregard for the lives of our Nation’s heroes will not be tolerated — and to pass a crime bill with enhanced protections for police officers.
I stand in steadfast solidarity with those who defend our freedoms and the families who love and support them. We pray for those who grieve the fallen and pledge that their lives, legacies, and sacrifices will forever be remembered by our grateful Nation.
By a joint resolution approved October 1, 1962, as amended (Public Law 87-726, 76 Stat. 676), and by Public Law 105-225 (36 U.S.C. 136-137), the President has been authorized and requested to designate May 15 of each year as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” and the week in which it falls as “Police Week.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2025, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 11 through May 17, 2025, as Police Week. I call upon all Americans to observe this week with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also call on the Governors of the States and Territories and officials of other areas subject to the jurisdiction of the United States to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twelfth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty‑five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.

DONALD J. TRUMP
