Yesterday, Jeanna and I visited Guy Sr. and Elizabeth at Rose Hill, and Guy Jr. and Nellie at Fielding. This is the first Memorial Day without Nellie, her having passed in July 2024 a few months shy of 91. We walked around both cemeteries for a bit, emphasizing those who had served in the military, to say thank you.

We haven’t made very many posts with regard to the house lately. We each have had a few health issues to address, but also some shifting in employment and financial priorities. But a summary of where we are: The main floor bedroom is largely torn apart in preparation for converting that into a main-floor laundry area. The roof having been replaced is holding up well (and still getting a ton of compliments). We are working toward painting of the exterior, rain gutter installation, and replacement of the concrete back patio and entryway stairs due to age-related degradation. Additionally, the southeast corner of the backyard is planned to have a second garage built to access from the alley. As is no surprise, our biggest challenge has been locating suitable craftspersons. Quality is unfortunately a premium these days and the cost will be whatever it is. But we won’t settle for less than the house deserves.

I think these pain in the ash trees enjoy making a mess this time of year, and laugh at us when we have to clean up after them. But then they bat their eyes and say “don’t forget you love me because I’m pretty.” Works every time.

Roof Replacement, Day 5 - The roof replacement is 98% complete. And for work that has gone incredibly well, we were due for some issue to pop up. We found out this morning that we were unable to finish shingling the shallow pitch section up to the peak because we were short of shingles. The material ordered for the job was a bit under-estimated. Good news is that this remaining section is 100% ice/water shielded and sealed. So we are not at risk for any leakage. But the four new roof vents will still need to be installed once the shingles come in, which is about ten days as we are told. The reason for being short on materials is due to the fact that, all of the valleys created by the dormers and entryway pitch involves cutting a lot of shingle sheets at angles, the remainder being discarded. The quantity of valleys determines the amount of excess material needed to cut those angles. Honestly I never would have thought of that. The roofing company has already ordered material and we have the balance of work scheduled based on the material promise date. Nothing goes perfectly to plan, and the roofing company has done a great job keeping on top this job. If this is the biggest issue we have, I’m pretty happy. And the roof looks amazing too!

Roof Replacement, Day 4 - We are 98% complete! Today was finishing the upper shingle install on the garage and tear-off of the shallow pitch rear of the house, plus a small section to the southeast. Not much to see from the ground but here are a few pictures from today’s work. The skip decking on the shallow pitch portion was a lot thicker than the rest of the house, likely as reinforcement for the added snow loading it would receive. As a result the drip edge had to be enlarged for proper coverage. Ridge caps were installed everywhere except the roof peak, which will happen tomorrow after the new roof vents are placed. Two roof vents and an alternate kitchen exhaust hood vent were installed and will also be finalized tomorrow.

Roof Replacement, Day 3 - Today was the big day! Shingles went up on the north face of the house. All new valley flashing and the original flashing underneath the dormers and other areas where siding went down to the roofline was able to be reused without disturbing the siding. The shingle pattern is stellar and the appearance of depth and relief is enhanced from viewing across the street. It really changes the presentation of the house. One last section of cedar shingles on the southeast corner plus the shallow rear portion will be attacked tomorrow.

Roof Replacement, Day 2 cont. - This afternoon wqs installation of new decking, ice/water shield, and drip edge for the north face of the house and garage. All of the original flashing is in very good shape and can be returned as part of the install. Hopefully tomorrow, we will see some shingles.

Roof Replacement, Day 2 - It has begun! As of 1130am, almost the entire north face has been stripped. Given that each cedar shingles was individually nailed in place, there is plenty of pounding in the leftover nails to smooth out the surface. The skip sheeting is in fantastic shape. Of course I requested to save the finials (metal ridge caps) to use as a template for reproductions, though they will be 100% decorative at that point.

Roof Replacement, Day 1 - Materials showed up this morning and were staged for work. The shingle bundles were hoisted up onto the shallow pitch portion of the roof. The crew will arrive first thing tomorrow morning but possibly later this afternoon if their other job wraps up early enough.

The last of the metal siding has been removed to clear way for the roof replacement. There is still some left but the necessary portion is now done, thanks to Eric Gallup with Curative Construction. The siding is in great shape. We also noticed that the damage done to the metal siding from the large tree branch that ripped the phone line out was entirely exterior to the original siding, so no damage to the house…what a relief. I met with the roof company yesterday in a walk-around to make sure we would have all their needs covered for the job. We are scheduled the week of August 7. To add to the fun, the roofing company is very excited to do this project as it’s one of the oldest roofs they have worked on and the shingle we have chosen will make our Colonial Revival really pop. They will have their marketing people out here with drones to capture the transformation.

Today produced a major accomplishment. With the tremendous ambition of our good friend Eric Gallup with Curative Construction, both dormers were entirely unveiled from behind the curtain of the 70s metal siding. The original woodwork is so beautiful. Almost all of the remaining high-elevation removal work was completed, minus the back face of the house. Due to the nature of a one-and-a-half story house with dormers, accessing the siding requires the work to be done in part from the roof. A 32-foot extension ladder and Eric being willing to harness up and anchor to the ridge line made all this possible. I have to commend Eric for his hard work today, but above all, doing it safely.
