🔥 Fall Creek Prescribed Fire Update

Crews successfully treated 185 acres yesterday along Skyline Ridge Road as part of the Fall Creek Aspen Improvement Project on the Palisades Ranger District.

Today, crews plan to continue prescribed fire operations in the Beaver Creek area near June Creek and Skyline Ridge roads. Operations will include both ground-based hand ignitions and aerial ignitions using a helicopter.

⚠️ Forest visitors are encouraged to stay informed and avoid the area where prescribed fire operations are taking place today for the safety of both the public and firefighters.

Prescribed fire operations depend on weather and ground conditions.

🔥 Fall Creek Prescribed Fire Planned

The Palisades Ranger District plans to begin ignitions on the Fall Creek Aspen Improvement Project the week of September 14. Approximately 2,500 acres are targeted for treatment around Beaver and Haskin Creeks, between June Creek and Skyline Ridge Roads, about 13 miles southwest of Swan Valley, Idaho.

🌲 The prescribed fire will help restore aspen stands by reducing conifer encroachment and encouraging aspen regeneration. The project will also reduce dead and down fuels and improve wildlife habitat.

💨 Smoke may be visible from Swan Valley and surrounding areas. Ignitions could continue for several days depending on weather and conditions, and residual smoke and fire activity may remain visible for several weeks.

Visitors should stay informed and use caution when recreating near the project area.

🚴‍♀️ The Palisades Ranger District has been hard at work in the Kelly Canyon area, and we’re excited to share an update and an invitation!

Over the past few weeks, crews completed the rough-in of the brand new Y Knot Trail ( #318). This trail will connect Buckhorn Spring to the McCarthy and Riverview trails near the Kelly Mountain winter warming hut, creating an awesome new loop for riders exploring the area.

We’ve moved into the finish work phase, shaping the tread and dialing in the final details. There’s still more to do, and we’d love your help!

🔥 Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Lifted in Eastern Idaho 🔥

With wildfire danger decreasing across the region, Stage 1 Fire Restrictions will be rescinded tomorrow, September 3, at 12:01 a.m. for the Eastern Idaho Fire Restriction Area.

While restrictions are being lifted, fire season isn’t over. Please stay vigilant—one of the most common causes of fall wildfires in eastern Idaho is abandoned warming fires left smoldering in remote areas.

Do your part to prevent wildfires:
• Never leave a campfire unattended
• Keep water and a shovel nearby
• Make sure your fire is dead out and cool to the touch before leaving
• Fireworks and exploding targets are never allowed on federal or state lands

Burn bans may still be in place for activities like debris or agricultural burning. Check burn permit requirements at: http://burnpermits.idaho.gov/

Simplot will be conducting stormwater maintenance work uphill from Forest Road 146 this week. Crews will be working on stormwater features above the road, and while no material is expected to move outside the designated disturbance area, brief traffic holds may be necessary.

To ensure public and worker safety, personnel will intermittently block Forest Road 146 for approximately 15–30 minutes at a time over several periods during the next three days. These short delays are precautionary in case any rocks or debris roll downhill during the maintenance operations.

Forest visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly, anticipate temporary delays, and use caution when traveling in the area.

Forest Road 195 (Medicine Lodge Bench) will be closed August 25 – September 4 between its intersections with FR 199 (Fritz Creek) and FR 171 (Fritz Cabin). Crews will be replacing the culvert where FR 195 crosses North Fritz Creek.

If you need access:
• Use FR 199 to reach areas north of North Fritz Creek.
• Use Webber Creek Road to reach areas south of North Fritz Creek.

Signs will be posted, but please help spread the word. Thanks for your patience as we complete this important improvement work!

⚠ Starting Monday, August 24, the Railroad Grade Trail 001 in Island Park will be closed between Forest Service Road 291 (Chick Creek) on the south end and Brook Road in the Rainbow Drive area on the north end.

Crews will be replacing the bridge decking over the Buffalo River, and the trail will remain closed for a few weeks to ensure public and worker safety.

Please plan ahead, respect all posted signs, and avoid the closed section of trail until work is complete.
