Idaho Falls area backcountry travelers...

It's time to shake the summer off your avalanche gear and come to our FREE avalanche awareness presentation at our office at 4279 Commerce Circle, Suite B, in Idaho Falls at 6 pm on Wednesday, the 19th.

If you have never been to an avalanche safety class, now is the time. Get to one before the snow is calling. Heck, there's a 30% chance of rain, so you don't want to be outside anyway.

We might focus some of our language on motorized users, but this class will benefit anyone recreating in the backcountry.

We are honored to have such a good group of people from Swan Valley Fire involved with our rescue efforts. It was a tough rescue but with all the help the team came through and got the job done.

Swan Valley Fire:
Last night (10/4) at 20:21 we were dispatched to assist with a search and rescue up Bear Creek trail, across the reservoir. A group of people hiked approximately 7 miles into the backcountry to the hot springs. On their descent down, a person from the party had slipped due to the wet trail conditions and injured their ankle preventing them from hiking out. Responding agencies included Bonneville County Search and Rescue, Bonneville County Sheriff’s and Idaho Fish and Game. Due to the extreme weather no helicopters were able to fly, so a rescue by foot was the only option. BCSO went up on dirt bikes, BCSAR by foot and Idaho Fish and Game by horse. Crews reached the party a little after midnight who were able to keep warm by sitting in the hot springs, and were safely guided/transported down to the trailhead in the early morning hours.

This serves as a great reminder to always carry extra food, water, rain gear and warm layers when venturing into the backcountry, in case of an emergency. Because of our remote location and weather conditions, emergency services are sometimes an hour or two away.

A huge thank you to everyone that responded to help, and to Swan Valley General Store for supplying food for everyone!
