On May 29 East Boise County EMS District recently responded to an emergency call at Kirkham Hot Springs involving a patient who had fallen approximately 20 feet from the hot springs area and landed in the water below. Due to the challenging terrain, swift coordination between multiple agencies was required to safely access, assess, and provide care to the patient.

We would like to recognize the quick response and professionalism of our Lowman-based EBCED crew. From the initial dispatch to patient contact and care, our team worked efficiently in a difficult environment. Their actions on scene demonstrated the value of ongoing training and preparedness.

On April 25, EBCED conducted a specialized training exercise at Kirkham Hot Springs focused on patient access, rescue considerations, patient packaging, and emergency response in the unique terrain and water environments found in the area. That training helped prepare our responders for a real-world incident in the same location just weeks later.

We would also like to thank Boise County Sheriff's Office Dispatch for their prompt handling of the call and coordination of responding resources. Effective emergency responses begin with the communications professionals who gather critical information and ensure the right resources are sent quickly.

In addition, we would like to thank Lowman Fire, the Idaho City Hotshots, and Air St. Luke's for their assistance and teamwork during this incident. Responses in remote and challenging locations require strong partnerships, and we are grateful for the dedication and professionalism of everyone involved.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of training, preparedness, and interagency cooperation. We are proud to work alongside so many outstanding partners to provide emergency services to the residents and visitors of Boise County.

The State of Idaho is adopting the “Ready, Set, Go” wildfire evacuation program as the statewide standard for public evacuation messaging.

State officials say the goal is to give every Idaho community a clear, consistent wildfire evacuation process that protects lives, improves service to the public, and reduces confusion.

The framework:

• Ready — Prepare for possible evacuation
•Set — Be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice
• Go — Evacuate immediately when directed by the county sheriff

Interagency implementation includes Idaho Department of Lands, Idaho Office of Emergency Management, Idaho Fire Chiefs Association, Idaho Sheriffs Association, Idaho Emergency Managers Association and other public safety partners.

Idaho Governor Brad Little has proclaimed May as Wildfire Awareness Month, urging Idahoans to begin preparations now as wildfire season begins.

East Boise County EMS District,Robie Creek Fire, and Wilderness Ranch Fire Conduct Joint Training Focused on Fire Rehab, Heat Emergencies, and Driver Safety

On Saturday, May 16, members of the East Boise County EMS District (EBCED) joined personnel from Robie Creek Fire Wilderness Ranch Fire and the Wilderness Ranch Quick Response Unit (QRU) for a day of collaborative training at the Wilderness Ranch Fire Station.

The morning training focused on Firefighter Rehabilitation (Rehab) Operations and the recognition, treatment, and prevention of heat-related illnesses and injuries. As temperatures begin to rise across Idaho, understanding the dangers of heat exposure becomes increasingly important for emergency responders and the communities we serve.

During the training, participants reviewed the purpose and setup of a fire rehab area, including:
💫Hydration and cooling strategies
💫Vital sign monitoring
💫Identifying signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
💫Return-to-duty considerations
💫Rehabilitation procedures following strenuous firefighting operations.
The training emphasized the importance of early recognition and intervention, as heat-related illnesses can rapidly become life-threatening if not addressed promptly.

Joint training opportunities such as these help strengthen the working relationships between agencies while ensuring responders are prepared to provide the highest level of care during emergency incidents.

Following the completion of the morning training, East Boise County EMS personnel returned to Idaho City to continue with ambulance driver training and safety exercises. Safe vehicle operations remain one of the most critical responsibilities of EMS personnel, particularly in East Boise County where responders frequently navigate steep grades, winding mountain roads, adverse weather conditions, and extended transport distances.

The afternoon driver training focused on:
💫Defensive driving techniques
💫Backing and spotting procedures
💫Emergency vehicle operations
💫Vehicle positioning and scene safety
💫Risk management and decision-making behind the wheel

Emergency vehicle crashes remain one of the leading causes of injury and death among first responders nationwide. Regular driver training ensures EMS personnel maintain proficiency and continue operating district vehicles safely for the protection of patients, crews, and the public.

East Boise County EMS District extends its appreciation to Wilderness Ranch Fire and QRU personnel for hosting and conducting the training. Through continued partnerships and ongoing education, our agencies remain committed to providing safe, professional, and effective emergency services to the residents and visitors of East Boise County.

Together, we train today so we are prepared when our community needs us tomorrow.

BCSAR MISSION RELEASE

On Saturday May 16 at approximately 09:52 Boise County Search and Rescue was contacted by the Boise County Sheriff's office to search and locate a missing camper in the Lowman area. Friends of the camper stated the last time they saw him was roughly 10:30 the night of the 15th and they woke up at roughly 06:30 on the 16th and their friend was missing. All vehicles were present at the camp site, so it was presumed that the missing man was on foot. Due to the large search area Boise County Search and Rescue requested the assistance of Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue. Boise County Search and Rescue established an incident command post in Lowman at Highway 21 and Bear Valley Rd. Boise County Search and Rescue and Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue met at the incident command location established a plan and deployed to the search area with multiple ATV’s, UTV’s, drones and search teams on foot.

Roughly 14:30 hours a search team that was walking the water way located an individual in the water that was later confirmed to be the missing camper. The scene was immediately turned over to the Boise County Coroner’s Office. The individual was pulled from the water and transferred to the incident command location following an investigation by the Deputy Coroner on scene. It was brought to the attention of the deputy coroner on scene that the individual was a Marine Corp veteran. The deputy coroner made sure the individual was draped with an American Flag as he was transferred to funeral services.

A special thanks To the Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue for the rapid deployment and assistance in this joint mission. This is a great example of successful teamwork.
Another special thanks to the Boise County Sheriffs office dispatchers who quickly notified Boise County Search and Rescue and kept us up to date with new information.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased Veteran.
