When the Town of Hyde Park took over the Union Cemetery, The Hyde Park Veterans Committee took it apon itself to Honor & Remember all Veterans buried there.
The first issue we found was the records of who was a veteran and where they buried hadn't been kept up-to-date. So we started our research by creating a partnership with the Boy Scouts Troops 37 & 80, The Hyde Park Historical Society and Dutchess County Veterans Affairs. It was through this collaboration we have been able to research and confirm over 1300 Veterans graves. This research still continues today with the help of Andrea Ortiz, the town of Hyde Park's Union Cemetery clerk and Cecelia Coppola secretary to the town supervisor.

The committee placed American Flags and first responder Flags on all own sites for Memorial day. The Flags are only required to be up for 10 days. but the committee has chosen to leave them up until the weekend after Veterans day. Committee members monitor the cemetery and replace Flags as needed. This practice will continue as long as we have Flags available.
During our research we also have indenitifed Veterans who were Killed in Action, these Veterans received an additional flag remembering their sacrifice.
We also honor our Veterans by being part of the Wreaths Across America program. This program is a very costly one and funding has not been there to properly maintain it, so this will be the last year at Union Cemetery.
Last be not least, we've started to try some products that were recommended to us by the Committee that takes care of the Wappingers Veterans graves sites. We've started to clean up some of the Veterans headstones and they look awesome. By cleaning a random stone by the garage, we found another veteran we didn't know about. This process takes time and we are hoping we will see larger results when we start to Veterans sections.

The Hyde Park Veterans Committee will be attending both Flag Retirement Ceremony's next weekend.
Hackett Hill Park 2pm to 6pm June 14th
Kights of Columbus 6pm June 15th.
You attend either event and drop off a flag or Flags can be placed in the Flag box at the Hyde Park Police Station. The box is emptied ever Friday.

The Veterans Committee is aware of a broken halyard on 1 of our flag poles in the Union Cemetery. It will be repaired as soon as possible .

As the chairman of the Hyde Park Veterans Committee I'm the person who makes the posts about our Veterans . The Veterans Committee has made it it's mission to honor all of our town Veterans.
We are responsible for investigating and maintaining all the Hometown Hero's Banners.
We have taken apon ourselves to be part of the National program, Wreaths Across America.
We also with our partners, the Boy Scouts Troops 37 & 80, American Legion Post 1303 and the Hyde Park Historical. Society have investigated and placed flags on graves.

The Town of Hyde Park Veterans Committee and a little help from our friends placed American Flags on all known Veteran graves in Union Cemetery, Doty, Friends, Rogers Family Cemetery, St James and Dutch Reform Graveyard. 3 years ago Union Cemetery listed only 550 Veteran graves. Through a Troop 37 eagle scout project that number went to 1203. This year we are verifying another 150. There are also 11 Veterans who were Killed in Action. Thier graves gave a red KIA flag.
We also are recognizing are Emergency responders, with a Red firefighter flag.

Recently 11 more American Revolutionary War veterans have been confirmed to be buried at Dutch Reform Church. They will also receive a flag in the next few days.

The Town of Hyde Park has a American Flag collection box @ the Hyde Park Police Station located at 3 Cardinal road. The Hyde Park Veterans Committee along with the Knights of Columbus and Boy Scout Troop 37 will be conducting a flag retirement ceremony in June.
