St. Ann's Center for Children, Youth and Families

St. Ann’s is a 501(c)3 organization serving children and young mothers in crisis. Since 1860, St. We also provide developmental child care.

We help mothers and children overcome crisis and achieve lasting independence and stability by providing a safe and supportive home, child care, education and employment assistance, and social work services within a Catholic community that welcomes all. Ann’s has been a pioneer in developing programs to help the Metropolitan Washington, DC area’s most vulnerable women and children, adapting our services to respond to the needs of the day. Ann’s has served as an orphanage, an adoption agency, an emergency shelter for abused children, a training ground for teenage mothers and an affordable day care program for working families. Today we offer three residential programs for abused and neglected children, teen mothers in foster care and their babies, and young single mother families. The foundlings and unprotected females we helped in 1860 are seen in the children and young women we serve today.

In Memoriam: Chuck Short | St. Ann’s Center mourns the loss of Chuck Short, a cherished member of our community and longtime champion for women, children and families.

Chuck served on our Board of Directors as Vice Chair and Chair from 2007–2014, helping guide St. Ann’s through an important period of growth and change. His leadership helped expand our transitional housing program and establish Hope House in 2013.

In 2018, St. Ann’s honored Chuck with the Michele Heidenberger Volunteer Award in recognition of his compassionate advocacy and commitment to vulnerable members of our community.

We are deeply grateful for Chuck’s years of service, leadership and love for St. Ann’s. We hold his family in our prayers and will remember his lasting impact on our mission.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Today we remember Michele Heidenberger, a longtime volunteer with St. Ann's Center. Michele, a flight attendant with American Airlines, lost her life on September 11, 2001.

Michele brought warmth and care to generations of children and women at St. Ann's Center. Over the years, Michele introduced countless family, friends, neighbors, and airline industry colleagues to St. Ann's, helping others to make a difference too.

Michele's brother-in-law Steve Heidenberger was instrumental in establishing the Michele Heidenberger Volunteer Award, presented annually at St. Ann's Hope Blossoms gala to an individual or group whose volunteerism has had a significant impact on vulnerable women and children. This year St. Anselm's Abbey School was recognized for the community's longstanding volunteer service at St. Ann's.

As we remember and celebrate Michele’s life and lasting impact, we offer heartfelt gratitude to all those spending this day in service. We hold in prayer the Heidenberger family, all those who lost their lives that day, and all whose lives were forever changed.

In 2026, Eric, Kyle, and Thomas served together as co-chairs of our Hope Blossoms Gala in memory of Michele and her brother-in-law Steve Heidenberger. Honoring that legacy, the cousins have once again stepped forward to serve as co-chairs for Hope Blossoms 2027, taking place on May 12, 2027. Read more at story.

🌻 Look how much can grow in a season.

Back on Earth Day, we gathered in our community garden to clean up, plant new seeds, and get ready for spring. Today, those tiny seeds have become ten-foot-tall sunflowers, surrounded by thriving tomato plants.

It’s a beautiful reminder of the growth we see at St. Ann’s, too. Women and children who came to our community this spring and summer are finding their footing, building on their strengths, and moving toward bright futures of their own, with encouragement and support along the way.

Our families are resilient. They are resourceful. And they are growing.

Thank you for being part of the community that helps make that growth possible, and celebrates every step along the way. 💛

Back-to-school is an exciting time for families starting in our Child Care Center, especially the women and children who live with us at St. Ann’s Center as they heal from trauma and build new foundations.
