GROWING AND GARDENING FOR COMMUNITY
Stacey Evers is the co-founder and chair of Hands on Harvests (HOH), a nonprofit boosting access to fresh produce and reducing food waste. In 2023, their gardeners delivered 12,000 pounds of backyard produce to local food pantries. HOH also establishes community gardens in food-insecure neighborhoods and runs a demonstration learning garden in in Northern Virginia.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND’S SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEM
Shurrell Hester, AmeriCorps VISTA, at UMD Dining Services, discusses the University of Maryland’s award-winning commitment to sustainability. UMD's sustainable food efforts span across the food system from farm to fork to compost: they operate the farmers market, campus pantry, Terp Farm, and partner with sustainable producers.

WHAT AND WHEN TO GROW: FALL AND WINTER GARDENING
George Vandenberghe is a winter-garden expert with years of experience successfully growing, harvesting, and overwintering, including citrus. He will discuss the many vegetables suitable for fall, winter, and spring gardening. Learn more about this strategy to extend our vegetable growing season and adapt to climate change.

The Crossroads Community Food Network will be hosting their 3rd Annual Crossroads Community Food Fair Sunday, May 19, from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm (Laurel Avenue Streetery, Takoma Park, MD). This event will feature over 15 local food and beverage businesses that will be showcasing their delicious offerings, 100% of whom are Black-owned, Immigrant-owned, and/or Women-owned businesses. Take some time this weekend to check it out!

Have you heard the news? Maryland No Kid Hungry just announced that State leaders have secured funding for summer EBT. A new summer meals program that provides $40 per summer month per child to families with eligible school-age children so they can purchase fresh produce and groceries throughout the summer. This is a BIG WIN for kids in Maryland! 🎉

Summer is often the hungriest time of the year for youth, this funding allows kids to be kids and continue having access to healthy meals all summer. Let’s celebrate this victory! 👏
