The Hutchinson Police Department has fi****ms training during the evening this Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Peace Officer Standard and Training (POST) mandates a low light (evening) fi****ms training once a year for Police Officers. We wanted to make the public aware in case you hear the gunshot sounds from the training. This time of year with less foliage and colder temps, sounds echo more. If you are concerned or feel anything is suspicious, don’t hesitate to call 911.

Hutchinson Police Services is proud to announce the return of its Citizen Police Academy. The CPA will give participants an inside look at the history, programs, and day to day operations of Hutchinson Police Services.
Participants will attend 7 class sessions, once a week on Wednesday evenings, covering various topics, concluding with a graduation ceremony at the end. Each participant will also have the opportunity to complete a 4-hour ride-a-long with an officer on patrol if they so choose. The first class is scheduled to begin on Wednesday January 7th. Class times will generally be conducted from 6:00pm and conclude at 9:00pm.
To be considered for inclusion, potential participants need to fill out an application and waiver, and submit to Sgt Ben Erlandson at Hutchinson Police Services beginning now and closing January 1st. The application and waiver can be found on the Hutchinson Police Services Website or at the front desk at Hutchinson Police Services (214 1st Ave NE). A limited background check will be conducted on each applicant to ensure all participants are fit for inclusion, as some of the topics covered include sensitive information and detail day to day operations of the police department. Once accepted, participants will be notified by January 2nd.
Class size will be limited. Participants under 18 years of age will need parent/guardian approval. Participants that have never attended in the past will be given priority. This class is open to those that live in, work in, or go to school in the City of Hutchinson. Any questions about the program can be directed to Sgt Ben Erlandson at [email protected] or at (320) 234-4491.
We look forward to hosting the 2026 Hutchinson Police Citizens Police Academy.

Stop for School Buses: It's the Law!

•State law requires all vehicles to stop for school buses when the bus driver activates the flashing lights and has the stop arm fully extended.
•Drivers who violate the law face a $500 fine.
•Drivers can face criminal charges for passing a school bus on the right, passing when a child is outside the bus, or injuring or killing a child.

Motorists:
•On undivided roads, motorists traveling both directions must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus that is displaying red flashing lights and an extended stop arm.
•Traffic traveling the opposite direction on a divided roadway with a separating median such as a cement wall or boulevard is not required to stop.
•Motorists should slow down, pay attention and anticipate school children and buses, especially in neighborhoods and school zones.

Students:
•When getting off a bus, look to be sure no cars are passing on the shoulder.
•Wait for the bus driver to signal that it’s safe to cross.
•When crossing the street to get on the bus or to go home, make eye contact with motorists before proceeding.

You can do your part by knowing the School Bus Stop-Arm Safety (link below) law and students can do their part (link below) by keeping themselves safe outside and inside the school bus. Working together, we can drive Minnesota toward zero deaths.
