The Town of Hurt lies in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and borders Campbell County along the Staunton River at Altavista. Nearby cities include: Lynchburg-21 miles, Danville-39 miles and Roanoke- 43 miles. Council meetings are the first Tuesday of each month, 7:00pm, at the Hurt Town Hall located at 533 Pocket Road. orge II to Benjamin Clements in 1741. Clements resided there at Clement Hill,, where gun powder was made during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Major John L. Hurt, who supervised the gun powder production in the Civil War, married into the Clement family and became owner of the plantation. He left the estate to his nephew and namesake John L. Hurt, Jr., who died in 1964 and willed estate lands west of Route 29 to the Town of Hurt if it were incorporated within three years. The Town was founded in 1966 and incorporated in 1967. Along with history, there are many attractions located in and near the Town of Hurt. The Roosevelt Mattox Park, which is located beside town hall and Wayside Park, located off U.S. 29 business, are perfect for cookouts and family gatherings. Smith Mountain Lake which is 40 minutes from Hurt, with 500 miles of shoreline. Leesville Lake, which is a down stream reservoir, with 100 miles of shoreline, are great for getaways. One can also find the Peaks of Otter and the D-Day Memorial in a 30 minute drive.
