We have received several phone calls regarding a notification sent out by Rocky Mountain Power for their customers. The notification detailed a planned power outage for Central & Southern Utah for Saturday 6/21. You can read more information on their Facebook post here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/165kd6u5f4/
Hurricane City Power residents have called wondering if this affects our power. The short answer is not right now. We received notification today that none of the circuits that would affect our residents are included. That is subject to change based on weather developments or the active Forsyth Fire that is burning near Pine Valley. Our power customers are not customers of Rocky Mountain Power. However, Hurricane City Power is a customer of theirs through the fact that they are the transmission provider for all of Southern Utah. In the very rare case of a main transmission shut off, it would affect the majority of Southern Utah, no matter who the power provider is.
There is no need for any panic or anxiousness, but it's a good reminder that it's important to know what to do in case of a power outage. By preparing, you can ensure the safety and well-being of your family, maintain essential functions, and minimize disruptions caused by power loss. Taking a proactive approach not only benefits you but also helps the whole community.
1. Create an Emergency Kit – prepare non-perishable food, water, can opener, first-aid kit, flashlights with extra batteries, battery-powered radio, and portable cell phone charger.
2. Plan for Medical Needs – ensure backup power source for electricity-dependent medical devices, develop emergency plan with healthcare provider.
3. Prepare for Food and Water Safety – keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed, have bottled water on hand.
4. Protect Your Home – unplug electric devices or use surge protectors when power is restored, operate generators outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
5. Stay Cool or Warm – in hot weather, close blinds and curtains. In cold weather, use alternative heating sources like wood stove and avoid using outdoor heaters indoors.
6. Stay Informed – monitor local weather forecasts and utility communications. Ensure your contact information is correct with your utility providers.
