Washington County – Just after 9:00 a.m. this morning, our fire crews were dispatched to a reported brush fire near Blue Springs Reservoir on Kolob Mountain.

Upon arrival, crews located a smoldering fire that was not actively spreading. The burned area was estimated at approximately 20 feet by 100 feet and was located adjacent to a propane tank.

Firefighters quickly extinguished all remaining hot spots and secured the area. The company responsible for the propane tank was contacted to evaluate the tank for any potential damage and determine its continued serviceability.

Additional resources from Color Country, including air resources, were initially dispatched due to the location and potential fire behavior. However, those resources were canceled after crews completed a scene size-up and determined the fire was contained.

The fire appears to be human-caused and remains under investigation.

Today several of our members were out at Sand Hollow Reservoir going through surface water rescue training and scenarios. Trainings like this are critical to ensure our crews are prepared when emergencies happen on the water.

As temperatures continue to warm up and more people head to the reservoirs and lakes, we want to remind everyone to stay safe while enjoying the water. Always wear a life jacket, keep a close eye on children, avoid swimming alone, and remember that conditions on the water can change quickly.

We appreciate the continued dedication of our crews who spend countless hours training to better serve and protect our communities.

Just after 1:30 a.m. this morning, our crews were dispatched to a vehicle accident on I-15 northbound near mile marker 35. Initial reports indicated that a vehicle had left the roadway, rolled over, and caught fire, also igniting a nearby brush fire.

When crews arrived on scene, all four occupants had already exited the vehicle on their own. All four patients sustained injuries and were transported by ambulance to St. George Regional Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Fire crews simultaneously worked to extinguish both the vehicle fire and the brush fire. The brush fire was contained to approximately a quarter acre in size.

Units from the Hurricane Valley Fire District, New Harmony Fire District, and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the incident, along with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Utah Highway Patrol.

Today at approximately 6:20 p.m., our crews were dispatched to a vehicle fire on northbound I-15 near mile marker 30. Upon arrival, firefighters found the vehicle fully involved, with the fire having spread into nearby brush. Strong winds pushed the fire north, contributing to rapid fire growth and causing an additional spot fire.

One occupant of the vehicle sustained minor burns while attempting to extinguish the fire prior to crews arriving. The individual was evaluated on scene by paramedics but ultimately declined further treatment and transport.

The fire ultimately grew to approximately 10 acres before crews were able to stop the forward progression. Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the night to monitor for hot spots and ensure the fire remains contained.

For the safety of emergency personnel operating on scene, one northbound lane of I-15 was temporarily shut down, along with the Exit 30 northbound off-ramp, while crews worked to contain the fire.

Along with the Hurricane Valley Fire District, responding agencies included the New Harmony Fire District, Utah Department of Natural Resources, Utah Department of Transportation, Utah Highway Patrol, and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office
