The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is deeply saddened to announce the passing of K9 Cyrus.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 14, 2026, as K9 Cyrus and his handler were concluding their shift, K9 Cyrus developed a sudden, unexpected medical emergency. His handler immediately rushed him to a local emergency veterinary clinic. Due to the severity of his condition, K9 Cyrus was life-flighted to the Las Vegas Veterinary Specialty Center for advanced care. Despite three days of intensive medical intervention, K9 Cyrus passed away peacefully with his handler and family by his side. He was seven years old.
A dedicated Belgian Malinois, K9 Cyrus served the Washington County community with honor and distinction since 2020. Throughout his decorated career, he was cross-designated as a member of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (VFAST).
During his five years of service with the Sheriff’s Office, K9 Cyrus completed over 360 patrol and narcotics deployments. His efforts directly contributed to 322 arrests and the removal of 2,013 pounds of illegal narcotics from the community.
While his operational statistics are highly impressive, K9 Cyrus will be remembered most by his fellow deputies for his vibrant personality. He was known for his enthusiastic spinning in his kennel and his habit of barking over his handler’s microphone every time the radio was keyed. K9 Cyrus possessed an unmatched work ethic, always eager to hit the streets and notorious for hating any downtime.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to Cyrus’s handler, his family, and the entire law enforcement K9 community during this time of mourning. The agency also expresses its sincere gratitude to the public for the overwhelming outpouring of support and condolences.
