Amy Werrett for Hurricane City Council

Amy Werrett for Hurricane City Council Vote for me because I am passionate about helping citizens feel understood and represented fairly.

I am running for city council because I am a concerned citizen who would love to contribute to keeping Hurricane a family friendly city with affordable housing and plentiful jobs so that our children will want to live and work here as adults. I have been a speech/language pathologist for the local school district for 15 years. I help students learn to be effective communicators and I want to bring

my expertise in communication skills to the community and help my neighbors, friends, and community have a voice in what happens in Hurricane. I want to earn your vote and trust that your voice will be respected and represented!

In the Loop – June 1, 2026
I want to update everyone on some important projects and communication efforts happening in our community.

Construction on 700 West is now underway. We have tried to keep the road open while work progresses, but that is becoming increasingly difficult. As a result, 🚧700 West is a HARD CLOSURE🚧 from the bridge to State Street for approximately six to eight weeks. Please follow the posted detour routes and help keep both workers and motorists safe. We will do our best to reopen the road on Sundays to allow access to the chapel. Affected homeowners and businesses are in the process of being notified. I understand this creates an inconvenience, but completing the project before school starts requires this temporary closure.

I am also working to organize a series of town hall meetings in different areas of the City. These meetings will provide opportunities for residents to discuss concerns and priorities specific to their neighborhoods as well as citywide issues. In addition, we are moving toward a public hearing focused on drainage concerns.

The City will be implementing a new notification system that will allow us to quickly communicate important information such as road closures, water outages, power interruptions, shelter in place, and other major events. Notifications can be sent by phone, email, or text to specific neighborhoods or the entire community. The system will also allow residents to report concerns such as potholes, fallen tree limbs, and stray animals.

To take advantage of this service, please make sure the City has your current phone number, cell phone number, and email address on file. We will use the system thoughtfully and only when necessary, but it will be a valuable tool for keeping residents informed and improving communication throughout the community.

If you have questions, concerns, or would like to discuss any of these topics, please contact the City Office at 435-635-2811, Ext. 111, and you will be directed to the appropriate staff member, City Council member, or to me.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day. I was grateful to participate in the sunrise service at the cemetery honoring our veterans, where around 100 people gathered to pay tribute. Seeing the graves decorated with flowers and flags was very meaningful.

Last Saturday, I also held my monthly community activity. While attendance was low, I still enjoyed spending time playing pickleball, practicing co****le, and visiting with local residents. These activities are a great opportunity for me to get to know members of the community and hear your concerns so I can better serve the city. I’ll begin posting future activities on the city website, and next month’s event will be pickleball, so bring your paddles and come join us.

I also want to remind everyone that construction on 700 West began yesterday. Traffic will likely be reduced to one lane, so please plan alternate routes, when possible, to help reduce congestion. Also note that Ash Creek SSD has a project going on 200 South between 300 West and 100 West that will likely take most of June to complete. Please be patient, aware, and help everyone stay safe with traffic patterns changing and delays.

Finally, as we continue facing drought conditions, I encourage everyone to conserve water and avoid unnecessary waste so we can meet our community’s needs throughout the summer. Thank you, and I hope everyone has a wonderful summer.
If you have questions, concerns, or would like to discuss any of the topics mentioned, please contact the City Office on 435-635-2811, Ext. 111, to be directed to a staff member, a City Council member, or myself.

In the Loop – May 11, 2026

At Thursday night’s City Council meeting, we approved a bid for a walking path bridge addition to the bridge on 180 West. This is something our community has needed for a long time, and construction should begin soon. We’re hopeful the project will be completed before the next school year.

I also want to highlight an exciting opportunity coming to Hurricane. The America 250 Truck Tour (museum), sponsored by the White House, will be in Hurricane from May 19–23 as part of its tour through all 50 states. Utah was selected for only two stops: Brigham City and Hurricane. The exhibit will be at Liberty Village, located at 2250 W. Liberty Way and will be open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will also be multiple family and children’s events throughout the week. Go to www.libertyvillage.org for more information on the upcoming events.

The pickleball courts at the community center are looking great. If you haven’t driven by lately, they should be completed and reopened for play by the end of this week.

I also wanted to address concerns about the 1150 West turn lane. I’ve spoken with the UDOT Region Director regarding the striping there. UDOT currently believes the road is not wide enough for a dedicated turn lane, although I believe it may be similar in width to the one at 700 West. I’m continuing to research the issue and work with UDOT because I haven’t given up on trying to make that turn lane happen.

Finally, as we move into the growing season, I’d like to remind everyone to keep sidewalks and intersections clear. Trees over sidewalks should have at least 10 feet of clearance, and bushes should be trimmed back so they don’t block walkways or visibility. Corner properties especially need to maintain clear sight lines for traffic safety. Please take a few minutes to check your yard and help keep our community safe and accessible for everyone.

If you have questions, concerns, or would like to discuss any of the topics mentioned, please contact the City Office on 435-635-2811, Ext. 111, to be directed to a staff member, a City Council member, or myself.

This week’s update covers several ongoing and upcoming city projects. Street maintenance will begin May 12 with chip sealing. Crews have already been working on crack sealing and asphalt repairs in neighborhoods. Residents may receive either slurry seal or chip seal treatments, which will continue for a few weeks. Watch for notices asking you to move vehicles off the street during work. While access to your home should remain possible, please drive slowly on freshly treated roads, as loose gravel can create hazards like windshield damage and temporary mess in gutters. Despite the inconvenience, this process is an efficient and cost-effective way to maintain roads. Slurry seal is also scheduled to begin June 29, and more information will be shared at a later date.

The new pickleball courts at the community center are nearly complete. While they were expected to open by the end of April, a confirmed opening date will be announced soon.

Construction of the new swimming pool is progressing, with a target completion date of June 2028. Additional infrastructure projects, including water tanks, power substations, and utility lines, are also underway. Crews continue working to ensure reliable water and power services.

Construction activity remains high throughout the area, with more road projects planned. Your patience is appreciated as the city works to maintain and improve essential infrastructure. We appreciate the efforts our crews are putting in to complete these projects.

Thank you to everyone who has shared feedback, concerns, and questions via text or email. Please continue reaching out so these topics can be addressed in future updates. [email protected]

In the Loop 4.27.26

I want to address the recent 0.33% sales tax increase that took effect April 1 to support EMS and fire services. This was approved by Utah Legislature and adopted by the Hurricane Valley Fire District, with oversight from the Washington County Commissioners and a Board representing the communities within the District.

Last year, before this option was available, the Fire District raised property taxes by 59% through a truth-in-taxation process to meet urgent operational needs. That increase will appear on your November 2026 property tax bill. Because the District operates on a calendar year budget (Jan-Dec), that funding was necessary for this year.

The plan is for this to be temporary. As revenue from the new sales tax is collected, the District has committed to removing the 59% property tax increase. By your 2027 bill, property taxes should return to previous levels.

Based on projected revenue, the sales tax may generate more than expected. I will push for the property tax reduction to exceed the 59% increase if possible.

This shift helps better balance who pays for these services. Property tax places the burden on residents, while sales tax allows visitors and tourists who also rely on these services to contribute. Sales tax also grows with economic activity, unlike property tax, which increases slowly and may not keep up with rising costs.

While I support using sales tax, I want to note that when this was discussed last year, during my time on the Fire District Board as Hurricane City’s representative, I was the only member who voted against the property tax increase.

Moving forward, I will monitor this closely along with Councilmember Dave Imlay, now Hurricane City’s representative on the Fire District Board. We will review budgets carefully to ensure excess revenue is not retained and that property taxes are reduced appropriately.

I ask for your patience during this transition. The current sales tax in Hurricane is now 7.08%, and the goal is to ultimately lower the overall tax burden of our residents. Thank you.
