We are just over ONE MONTH away from the Huron Police Department's National Night Out, and we can't wait to see our community come together for an evening of fun, food, and activities!

The Huron Police Department is proud to recognize Captain Mark Johnson for receiving the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) National Law Enforcement Public Servant Citation.

Captain Johnson was nominated by Chief Layher in recognition of his outstanding leadership, unwavering dedication to the profession of law enforcement, and continued service to the Huron community. Throughout his career, Captain Johnson has demonstrated a commitment to excellence, professionalism, and public service, making a positive impact on both the department and the citizens we serve.

We would also like to extend our sincere congratulations to Christina Guthrie of the Huron Ambulance Service, who was recognized as the VFW Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) of the Year. Christina's commitment to providing exceptional emergency medical care, compassion for those in need, and dedication to serving our community make her truly deserving of this prestigious recognition.

These awards highlight the exceptional individuals who work every day to protect, serve, and care for the citizens of Huron. We are fortunate to have dedicated public servants like Captain Johnson and Christina Guthrie serving our community.

The Huron Police Department would like to congratulate Officer Titus Waldner and Officer Ryan Briesemeister on the successful completion of South Dakota Law Enforcement Basic Certification Training!!

Both officers graduated today, from the 201st Session.

Officer Waldner’s mom who was a former law enforcement officer in Wyoming presented him with his certificate.

A friendly reminder with all the young wildlife in the area. If you have questions and see baby wildlife you can call the Huron Police Department before you move it. We will reach out to our wildlife partners and animal control.

“If you care, leave it there.”

This time of year, it’s common to come across young wildlife, fawns tucked in the grass, baby birds on the ground, ducklings wandering near water, and more. It can be really tempting to step in, but in most cases, the best thing you can do is simply give them space.

What might look like an abandoned animal is often just mom nearby, watching and waiting for the right moment to return. Human interference can unintentionally cause stress or even separate them for good.

A reminder that The Outdoor Campus–Sioux Falls does not take in baby or injured wildlife, but we’re always happy to help you figure out what you’re seeing.
