Spain is running dry and trying to get off fossil fuels. Solving either problem is notorious for being fiercely expensive and land-intensive. Solving both simultaneously requires an entirely different approach to engineering.
They just opened a floating solar farm on the ocean.
The top half absorbs the sun to generate clean electricity for the grid. The bottom half uses a fraction of that exact power to pull in seawater and run it through a desalination process, instantly producing fresh drinking water.
It is not simply two machines sharing a raft. They actively rely on each other. The ocean naturally cools the floating panels, increasing their electricity output far beyond what they would achieve baking on the dry Spanish mainland. The panels then use that exact boost in efficiency to power the water filtration. Two crippling survival crises treated by a single integrated system taking up absolutely zero usable land.
