🇺🇸 Passing the torch, preserving the legacy.

Airmen, family members, and distinguished guests gathered at Hurlburt Field on June 1, 2026, to witness the 492nd Special Operations Wing change of responsibility. Chief Master Sgt. Joshua Moore, outgoing command chief, relinquished responsibility as the wing's senior enlisted leader to the incoming command chief, Chief Master Sgt. Matthew Macella.

The passing of the wing colors symbolizes the transfer of responsibility for the care, welfare, readiness, and professional development of the enlisted force. During his tenure, Moore helped guide the wing through a period of historic transformation while championing Airmen and their families. As Macella assumes the role of command chief, he brings a commitment to transparency, accountability, and building the next generation of Air Commandos.

Thank you, Chief Moore, for your dedicated leadership and service to the Carpetbagger family. Welcome, Chief Macella, as you lead the enlisted force into the next chapter of the 492nd SOW.

May we never forget the sacrifice our service members made for our country. Today, we honor our fallen brothers and sisters and hold their memory in our hearts. Because of their courage, we can call the United States the home of the free and the brave.

This Memorial Day, we also remember the legacy of the original Carpetbaggers, the men of the 801st/492nd Bombardment Group who flew covert missions deep into Nazi‑occupied Europe. These airmen delivered more than 5,000 tons of supplies, inserted 662 resistance fighters, and risked everything in the shadows so others could fight in the light. Their courage helped shape the 492nd Special Operations Wing and the Carpetbaggers of today, ensuring our nation’s commitment to freedom for all.

We remember them. We honor them. 🇺🇸

As the United States’ Air Commandos, Air Force Special Operations Command remains committed to its motto, “Any Place, Any Time, Anywhere,” a creed Air Commandos carry with them as they conduct special operations missions around the world.💪

To meet that mission, AFSOC entered a new era of specialized aircraft. The OA‑1K Skyraider II brings adaptable capabilities for close air support, precision strike, and armed intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. The Skyraider II, is capable of rapid break-down, disassembly and reassembly to be quickly moved during strategic airlift to a new location.

When the mission demands precision and persistence, the Skyraider II ensures AFSOC and the 492nd Special Operations Wing never stops, never slows and never misses.🎯

Did you know?✈️

The 492nd Special Operations Wing is home of the formal training unit for the OA-1K Skyraider.

The OA-1K was designed to be adaptable across mission requirements, from close-air support, precision strike, or armed intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance. It can also be moved during strategic airlift to a new location, overcoming the tyranny of distance. Any time... any place. 💪

“History makes you smart—heritage makes you proud.” 🇺🇸

Today, we proudly celebrate the anniversary of the activation of the 492nd Special Operations Wing! Activated on May 10, 2017, at Hurlburt Field, the 492nd SOW stepped up to lead Air Force Special Operations Command’s irregular warfare activities, taking on the critical mission of organizing, training, and equipping our Air Commandos for the future fight.

While the Wing officially stood up in 2017, our legacy runs deep. The 492nd designator traces its roots back to the heroes of World War II and the 492nd Bombardment Group. Known as the "Carpetbaggers," these trailblazers flew heavily modified B-24s deep into enemy territory to drop personnel and supplies to resistance fighters. They were among the very first aviation special operators, and their intrepid spirit continues to live on in our ranks today.

From the secret night flights over occupied Europe to developing modern-day tactics, techniques, and procedures across the globe, the 492nd SOW remains ready to answer the nation's call—Any Time, Any Place. 🦅⚡️

Join us in celebrating the past, present, and future of the 492nd Special Operations Wing!

Enjoying a little sunshine ☀😎

A C-146A Wolfhound sits on the flightline during a recent tour where medical airmen learned about its mission with the 492nd Special Operations Wing.

The Wolfhound's primary mission is to provide U.S. Special Operations Command flexible and responsive operational movement of small teams and cargo in support of Theater Special Operations Commands, as well as medical evacuation. Airlift missions are conducted to prepared and semi-prepared airfields around the world and the C-146A Wolfhound and crews have been continuously deployed since October 2011!

Happy birthday, SOCOM! 🎂

For the past 39 years, U.S. Special Operations Command has played a pivotal role in synchronizing global special operations, maintaining ready and postured forces, and delivering precise, lethal capabilities while fostering strong partnerships with allies across the globe.

“It is our role as Special Operations to meet tomorrow’s challenges, we must continuously adapt today—strengthening our capabilities to remain ready, responsive, and lethal.” - ADM Mitch Bradley

We’re grateful for the 7,000 deployed in 80 countries that make up USSOCOM and all you’ve done to keep the tip of the spear sharp and our nation secure. ♠️
