Walker County recently welcomed students participating in the Sam Houston State University College of Criminal Justice Summer Camp for an inside look at how local government and the justice system work together to serve the community.
Throughout their visit, campers had the opportunity to hear directly from several Walker County officials about their daily responsibilities and the important roles they play in the criminal justice system.
Each presenter shared how their office contributes to public service, from maintaining county records and overseeing court operations to emergency preparedness, judicial proceedings, and the prosecution of criminal cases. Students were able to gain firsthand insight into the collaboration required among county departments to ensure public safety and uphold the rule of law.
The visit provided campers with a valuable opportunity to ask questions, explore potential career paths, and better understand the many professions that make up the criminal justice system.
Sam Houston State University's College of Criminal Justice Summer Camp is designed to introduce high school students to careers in criminal justice through hands-on learning and interactions with professionals.

Walker County is accepting applications for the position of Purchasing Agent. This position is responsible for administering county purchasing functions in accordance with Texas Local Government Code and county purchasing policies.
Responsibilities include:• Managing procurement and purchasing activities• Preparing and supervising bids, proposals, and contracts• Maintaining inventory and county asset records• Ensuring compliance with state and county purchasing regulations• Coordinating with county departments, vendors, and officials
Preferred qualifications may include:
•Experience in governmental purchasing or procurement• Knowledge of Texas purchasing laws and competitive bidding procedures• Strong organizational, communication, and contract management skills• Relevant procurement certifications such as CTCM, CTCD, CPPB, or CPPO preferred
